Significant HDMI output issues with RS130 as a Roon endpoint

I purchased a RS130 and am impressed with most aspects of performance so far.

However, I’m experiencing major problems with dropouts, noise, and timing issues when streaming from Roon to the RS130 and attempting to output via HDMI. Basically, it is a severe problem that renders the sound unable to be listened to.

It is NOT a network issue as I am streaming to many other endpoints with no difficulty and have very high internet upload and download speed.

Plus the coax output and the toslink outputs are fine.

I’d love to find a solution other than returning the unit.

Has anyone else been able to stream to an RS130 as a Roon Endpoint, and output via HDMI without problems?

I was just going to post a question here. I just for the first time are able to use the 130 with my PSaudio MKII DAC and hear something. I was building room, but hooked up devices and they “talked” while I was burning in device. But now that I have hooked up to pre and amps and speakers, it works, but when I skip a song the first time the sound goes away. DAC still reads signal coming in and Rose says its playing. But no sound. Skip a song or change albums and it comes back. Skip again and its fine. Happened twice to me. No idea what is going on. Using USB to DAC. Yesterday was first time I got it set up in new room.

If I may ask: are you using the I2S or the HDMI port for your output and what device do you use for that input?

I’m purposely using HDMI, not I2S.

To my understanding of the RS130 manual, the HDMI output is meant for (max) 4K signal to your tv set.
If you mean to connect your dac using I2S try using that output port and selecting it.
Good luck!

I went and reread the manual. It reads to me that HDMI is only used to output 4K video. You would need another output for audio.

If it’s not a Roon issue and Toslink etc are fine, then the statement above would appear to be correct.

Why do you need to output audio over HDMI?

Why is there an HDMI passthrough setting then. That’s generally for sending an audio signal without DSP processing?

Also, why do the toslink and coax deactivate when the HDMI is active…this would imply they could not be used in the scenario you describe.

If a $145 AppleTV can send HDMI audio out, why can’t a RS130

I’m trying to feed a stream to a Smyth Realiser and need HDMI out.

Thanks for trying to help, but this makes no sense.

Yes, it should bypass HD audio, but not any surround format. Rose cannot read Dolby Atmos, let alone bypassing it. You have wrong device for that purpose. There is another thread about difficulties of the sound over HDMI on Rose. Some users report that audio over HDMI it is working if you connent it to tv and then take HDMI ARC out from TV to the receiver.

I have no idea if hires sound will pass through the HDMI or not. That is what I2S and USB is for. The HDMI is meant to go to TV or or you video processor. it may or may not work for some formats. I have no idea what formats are supported.

I did try the I2S and it works perfectly. For some reason Roon thinks via USB with my DAC that it can control the volume even when the usb vol is set to off on the 130. it mutes it. I go in vol settings in roon and click unmute and it sound is back. skip a song and it mutes again. There is no vol control on RS130. Roon has it wrong. I may have to report it to roon. Either way I2S works great with my combo (it may be the combo I have that causes it).

I bought the unit new from a reputable dealer and was specifically told the HDMI out was active. I need it in my specific use case.

I don’t want it decoding anything. The Smyth does that. I want it to simply pass the HD Audio signal via HDMI. Also, it makes no sense that when the HDMI output is active you can’t activate the Coax or Toslink output.

Pity this device can’t send an HDMI audio signal out like an Apple TV and many other products.

I’m moving on. Packed for return.

Thanks.

Have you contacted your dealer to help you out?

Chech another thread on this topic where user confirmed that HDMI audi works if it is run thru TV. It is not problem in encoding in the unit, the problem is that Rose can’t read Dolby at all. It cannot enter the device, Rose refuses to play.

I simply want to output without processing an audio stream from the RS130. I don’t want it to read dolby. I’ve found that the HDMI passes PCM data but with clicks and pops and timing issues.

yes i have contacted my dealer.

To start with a basic test: does the RS130 produce sound when connecting to a tv set using HDMI?

I couldn’t even get it to pass 44.1 2 channel PCM without weird clicks, pops, and timing issues.

To understand the word “passthrough” on HDMI, see:
