Today I connected my RD160 DAC directly to my Wadia a340 power amplifiers. I’m surprised at how good it sounds; the RD160 probably has very good preamping. I think I’ll leave it as is, without the integrated RA280 amplifier. It probably sounds so good because my Wadias have a higher power output. The problem is, what to do with my RA280, which is less than a year old?
If you connected the RD160 DAC directly to your Wadia a340 power amplifiers and the sound was much better than expected, it seems reasonable to continue using your system as it is now.
Although it may be unfortunate, you might consider finding another way to use the RA280 or possibly selling it to someone else as a used unit.
Thank you, ROSHAN. I think the RA280 is just a little bit short on power for my Monitor Audio PL200 G3 speakers. The Wadias deliver 500 at 4 ohms; the RD160 is simply amazing, I’m never getting rid of it
Usually, when I connect a DAC directly to a power amplifier, it sounds a bit thin, but with the RD160, this is not the case at all. The bass is amazing and super tight, I also hear more details, and the soundstage is better.
I only play digitally, so I don’t really miss a separate pre-amplifier that much.
Thank you for your positive feedback about the RD160.
