Clock sync with external LHY SW 10 has drop outs and restart every 15 seconds

Good morning, I have my RS 130 for a while and just recently added a LHY SW 10 which has its own clock. When I connect via a Stealth BNC 75 Ohm and sync either the connection symbol is red (not connected) or is green plays music (track) for about 15 seconds and then restart from the beginning of the track several times in a row. Sometimes the Rose reboots completely. This happens to me all the time (I´m playing Qobuz over the Rose 130 out of the streamer connected with LWL through Ethernet). When I engage the internal Rose clock music is playing flawless. It seems that the clock in the SW 10 and the Rose on itself are working without problems! Is the sync software of the Rose having a problem while working from time to time?? It would be not acceptable for me if the sync function is not working since in my system I hear a sound improvement in those rare moments when clock sync is working for a short while. I would appreciate a recommendation and solution. Thanks for stepping in and regards from Germany Oliver

Hi Oliver,
As far as I know, the clock in the SW10 is for internal use only. It is not supposed to be used as an external clock for other devices.
You’ll need a dedicated Clock device, such as the OCK-1 or OCK-2 from LHY, in order to be used as the external clock for the RS130.

Many thanks for your answer Tom, the question is then why is there a BNC connection 50/75 Ohm at the LHY? The Rose has a 75 Ohm input too and is able to clock sync! why do I get from time to time the external clock playing music?
This is whats written in the discribtion of the SW10:"…the SW-10 has a 10mHz OCXO clock at its heart, linked to a BNC input and output. So you can use this network switch as a master clock to synchronize other external sources, or simply resynchronize the input signal." Regards Oliver

Hi Oliver, I believe you can use both devices as intended. Shortly, I intend to do the same.

Quickly reviewing what’s on the Beatechnik website:
Featured with Two(2) BNC 50Ω Square-wave 7dBm MCLK IN/OUT ports for advanced users who demand the best

Can you please try with a 50 Ohm cable and report back?

As I understand, it also makes a difference when using a high quality cable.
Good luck!

Hi Oliver,
You are right that the LHY SW10 does have clock input and output ports. I am sorry that I mixed it up with the company’s lower model SW6.
Just checked the spec of the SW10, the clock is 50ohm not 75ohm. Perhaps it’s the cause of your issue.

Hello Jobbie, many thanks for your input! Since my SW 10 arrived without manual I assumed it has a 75 Ohm connection like my CD - Player. Since it is 50 Ohm for the SW10 it explains why I couldn`t get a steady signal. I will check it out but need to get a decent 50 Ohm BNC cable. Once done I will repart. Enjoy the rest of the week Oliver

Tom, I also like to thank you for your remarks and see my comment to the message of Jobbie. Thats simply the explanation for the drop outs and the signal being not steady established. Since both clocks were working I was certain that either something was not in order with the RS 130, which is by the way a beautiful piece of art and well sounding! Im really curious what a 50 Ohm cable will do. I will report back in any case. Cheers Oliver

Hi Oliver,
Hope a 50 ohm cable could solve your problem.
Happy listening

Hi Tom, just ordered a 50 Ohm Mutek Coax. Will take a view days until it arrives. Will report once in the system. Enjoy your day Oliver

Hello all, all my digital devices have 75 Ohm which seems to be the majority - I thought thats also true for the SW10. I have been advised that its only 50 Ohm. Consequently the sync didn`t work.

When I changed to a 50 cm Mutek coax 50 Ohm cable everything worked flawless and my impression after doing the sync was a bit of “fresher”, more punch and detailed sound (micro dynamics and ink black background). Certainly this was not day and night in my system but still audible. I spend two evenings of intense audition and my final conclusion is: The LHY SW 10 is worthwhile the expense if you intend to shift your system to a higher level. The improved power supply, the clock as well as the shielding/housing do the job. As usual to push the system to the last percents are quiete expensive! So decide for yourself - if you have a high resolution system it seems the way to go - give it a try while you can.

Have a great weekend Oliver

Great. I am using LHY OCK-2S, which enhances SQ as well.
Happy Listening

Hi Tom, its nice when others confirm what one is hearing and coming to the same conclusion. Its a kind of “evidence” thing! Enjoy the music Oliver (now I`ll give my Gaia and the Terminator Plus a try with I2S and check what this might do in addition ;-)!)

@TomT
Can you detail the differences/contributions that the clock brings to the SQ?
Thank you in advance
Patrice

Frankly the improvement is subtle. But everything seems to be more stable and a bit more comfortable to the ear. When doing it without the clock, there seems to have something missing.

Hell Patrice, now I find the time to answer: As Tom describes it its not kind of day and night. In my system, the sound stage is bigger, you hear more micro dynamics (probably due to the darker background) in addition, I noticed that on some well kown tracks to me I hear passages of music with details which have been obviously hidden by the “noise” of the background before The sound overall is more dynamic/organic and you can hear member of the band more separated. For your information I had the normal Cisco Meraki switch with a separate linear power supply before. In my book this slight improvements made the purchase worthwhile. Enjoy your system and have a good X-Mas time Oliver

Great. You described it clearly. :+1: :+1:
An early Merry Xmas to you and your family.

@Kruss and @TomT,

Thank you for these explanations.
I had an unfortunate experience with a Mutech nano on my Sotm switch and RS130, it is very likely that the clock was defective.
I will look into it again.
Merry Christmas and holiday season to all

Hi Patrice. Could you provide more details about this? I just hooked up a Ref10 Nano and so far it seems to be working very nicely.

Let’s say that I heard more distortion on all frequency ranges, it was no longer Clear.
I had good coaxial cables from Cybershaft, I changed them for others, without more results…
I returned the Mutech and sold the cables…

Unfortunate. And the seller / retailer to where it was returned never told you if the Mutec was bad? In my case I can say the improvement is easily heard. Even my wife commented on it and she has no idea I’d even installed it.
