DB Scan experience with Rose OS

Hi, today I did some tests with DB Scan performance on my RS130, latest updates installed.

DB Scan on my network folder on Synology NAS (DS1621+ with 10GB network card, RAID-Storage, 32GB RAM, 2x1TB Read/Write Cache - pretty fast system), RS130 connection via WiFi 6 / LAN to NAS (around 60 - 80 MB/sec throughput), music folder is around 4TB, 7114 folder, 84011 files (not only audio, also artwork).

Scan time around 3 hours, 67385 files imported (66025 Audio, 1360 Video).

Compared to my prior streamer Auralic Aries G2: Around 30 min for the same music folder. No comparison to Roon, but for Roon I use a dedicated Intel i7-Server with ROCK installed: A few minutes, rescan less than 30 seconds.

Special on Roon OS is following: At every start on left corner of the display the message DB-caching appears for around 15min, does somebody know what’s going on here?

Summary: Compared to other streaming platforms the DB scan is very slow, but not as horrible as mentioned in other threads of this forum. My test is concerning only the scan speed, not the scan quality!

@renderjoe

We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

With current technology, the entire DB must be rescanned when a new album is added, but any modifications (additions/deletions) are reflected in the media library.
Re-scanning takes a little less time than scanning the database for the first time, but since the entire database is searched once, there is a problem in that it takes a long time for the added information to be reflected.
As you suggested, we will try to add a method to update only the parts that have been modified.

Every optimization on DB Scan will be welcome, so this are good news that you are working on that, especially on better Rescan performance.

Do you have a explanation for the DB-Caching message after each Start Restart on RS130? What is the RS130 doing, caching the music library into memory (or ssd)? Message appears about 15min…

I don’t have an answer to your question but has complained to HiFi Rose about the scanning times for 1.5 years now.

I have also my music on a Synology NAS. The music is stored in folders according to genre. The library consist of 20 TB music. Take days to do a rescan if I added a new ripped CD.

My solution was to create a new folder on my NAS that I called “New Music”. When I have added a new ripped CD I put it in the folder “New Music”. I then delete the database in Roses Media library for that folder and thereafter create a new database that would be scanned. The scanning now takes 15 minutes and the DB-Caching will take 65 minutes.

There is a workaround regarding the endless DB scan. You can play music directly from your network folder, without waiting until DB scan is finished.

Rose App > Music > Folder > (Your Music Folder)

That’s not perfect, but better as endless waiting.

Or use Roon, you wait only seconds or minutes (depending of your setup) for DB scan…

Yes I know that, but then the music isn’t searchable. That’s why I do it the way I do. I have Roon but in my system the Rose app sounds better (sadly because Roon has a much better interface).

Yes, no search because the music isn’t in the Rose music database. But I was talking only of a workaround.

I am SW Developer, so for me it’s understandable that Rose can’t fix this problem for years. There are much better SW solutions out there, probably Rose has difficulties to hire qualified SW developers. I am wondering that all the good HiFi Rose reviews never mention this killer criteria for a lot of people NOT to buy HiFi Rose if they known this in advance.

Rose App sounds better than ROON? That’s I have to verify, it was not obviously to me because of the bad user experience with the Rose App always using ROON.

@ROSEHAN @ROSELOA
An idea to improve DB (Re-)Scan: Create a media library index on the attached storage (Internal, External, network folder). For Re-Scan only scan the changes. This will improve Re-Scan massively. This is quiet simple to implement, please forward this to your SW developers!
