I’m curious, if I use the rs150b strictly as a streaming DAC and run it to a preamp using a fixed output, does that process bypass the preamp section of the rs150b? Or is it merely taking the variable volume control and making it a fixed output?
Why? Well I’m wondering if the unit is adding a gain stage before my preamp or is it an unprocessed signal? I’m thinking it’s the latter because when I’ve tried the RS150b “as a preamp” I have to say I was unhappy with the sound (plus the loud “pop!” Sound it sent to my speakers when the rose unit was put into standby mode). BUT when I run the rose into my preamp it sounds completely different and better!
Because, I’m currently (while waiting for my external DAC) playing a bit with the gain settings for the analogue out:
The RS150 doesn’t have an analogue volume control (it will done in the DAC itself) and also no analogue PreAmp integrated.
So a real PreAmp can be a good thing for a better SQ. But you’ve take care about the gain settings for the analogue outputs. My PreAmp manual says: Max 3.5 V for 0dB (unbalanced) and so I set the output from the RS150 to 6 V (balanced).
To my understanding only the unbalanced outputs are adjustable for fixed output, I don’t see any selections that offer settings for the balanced outputs.
No, the settings are for both:
At first for the balanced output and then in the brackets for unbalanced one. You can’t set them independently.
Thank you, clearly you’re correct!
