Doubt with the XLR connection

Hello,
I have a RA180 and a 150b connected with a balanced cable.
The applications are updated.
The RA180 comes with a label showing how the pins should be positioned (European system)

In the streamer it says that for the European system activate “ON” and the drawing matches the RA180
In the windows app it says “OFF”
Which is the correct one?
I attach images:
Greetings and thanks

Notice that the Rose App in windows 10 says.
Off: Phase invert Off-European system

And on the screen of the 150b I understand the opposite.
Phase invert On-European system
Thank you

Hello,

I’m sorry to confuse you.

RS150B XLR is Male, European system when phase invert is OFF.
Pin 1(Left) : GND
Pin 2(Right) : HOT
Pin 3(Lower): COLD

When phase invert is ON, which is American System,
Pin 1(Left) : GND
Pin 2(Right) : COLD
Pin 3(Lower) : HOT

The menus will be fixed with next update.

Hi Roseloa, @ROSELOA
If possible, please add PIN number to the graphics on the 150B as well, so as to clarify better which pin is hot and which pin is cold.

I’ve been using Phase Invert ON on my 150B to connect to my RA180 based on the graphics shown on the unit. It seems to be wrong as you described above. It’s very confusing without the PIN number indications.

QUESTION: should I change to use Phase Invert OFF on my 150B regardless it is named USA system in the settings menu, so that it can be correctly connected to my RA180?

Pls clarify.
Tom

BTW, @ROSELOA there’s really no need to call the phase setting USA System or European System at all because there isn’t a unified standard among manufacturers, or in other words, exceptions are commonly seen. Naming it USA System or European System only causes confusions.

It would be more effective to mark down which number (#1, #2, #3) belongs to which pin, instead of just using GND, HOT and COLD.

With the pin numbers, we users can easily find out and choose the correct phase setting (ON or OFF) in our XLR connections.

For example, the XLR pin #2 on my RA180 is HOT. In theory, all I need is to choose the matching phase setting with pin #2 that is HOT on my 150B. That would do.

But as shown in the image attached, there is NO indication for the pin numbers at all. That’s why I am confused, and so do many other users.

I’d appreciate it very much if you could help adding the pin numbers to the phase selection image in your next update (whether you want to keep the names of USA or European System or not), so that we won’t get confused any more.

Best
Tom

Hello TomT,

Thank you for your kind words. This is the image that will be added in next update for phase invert.
Hope this can reduce people’s confusion.

PS. To match the phase with RA180, turn off phase invert in RS150B. It won’t damage both RS150B and RA180, but I still apologize for confusing you.

Thank you very much @ROSELOA for your quick response.
With the pin numbers included, it is crystal clear which pin is which now. Thank you.

But pardon me, I still want to say the names of American System and European System are unnecessary. Here I attached a few images of XLR pin configurations from McIntosh, Mark Levinson, Krell and Jeff Rowland. You can see all Pin #2 on these equipments are HOT (but Rose claims them European.)

These companies are all world famous HiFi manufacturers from the US. So it is obvious that the classification or definition of American System and European System in your machines are inappropriate and confusing.

So why not take the confusing names out from your next update as well?

Just an idea for your consideration.

Tom

Hello,

Certainly, your point is valid, and there should be no problem even if we remove the European and American notations. However, there are still amplifiers that use European and American notation. The image below is from Marantz’s PM-10 manual. There may be differences depending on the brand. There may also be users who find European and American notations more convenient. I think this is a question with no definite answer. For now, we will maintain this notation, but if we monitor the trend and determine that it is really not necessary, we will remove it. It wouldn’t be a difficult task.

Thank you sincerely for your valuable feedback and great interest in our product.

Marantz PM-10 Manual

Surely no problem.
As long as the pin numbers will be marked for users’ reference in your next update, that’s fine with me.
Thanks again.
