How to set fix level output for USB out?

How do I set a fixed max level output for USB out to a DAC?

Turn off software controlled volume?

Could you explain further? My RS 151 is significantly quieter when I connect it to an external USB DAC than to the internal DAC. And when I tested it in the store once with an external DAC, there wasn’t that much difference. Of course, you can always turn up the volume and the problem will go away, but there’s probably something wrong with the settings. Tomorrow I’ll try plugging the Rose into the other port and see how the volume is. I use the app’s volume controls.

So you’re using the USB-A out to an external DAC, and then from the external dac to what?

Can you describe your setup?

I’m assuming that your RS151 has volume control, and your DAC also has volume control?
What about your Amplifier? (Or pre-amp? )

The issue is that unless you’re using it to control volume it should be at 100% for that component.

Have you also tried to use TosLink or SPDIF to your other DAC?

I had assumed this too, but it didn’t work for me.

My signal chain is as follows:

  1. Rs520 (USB Out)
  2. (USB In) Topping D900 (XLR Line Out)
  3. (XLR Line In) Mcintosh C2700 (Pre Out)
  4. Mcintosh 2152

I would think turning off Software Volume on the C2700 would work but it didn’t unfortunately

Even after turning off Software Volume Control on the RS520, I can still change the volume on the USB Out from the 520

Ok, that’s kind of a weird setup.
You have an all in one and you’re not really using its capabilities?

Or did you mean RS250?

On the RS520, if you look at the last USB setting, there is a USB volume control setting (on/off)

I’m not sure what to tell you.
There are a couple of things… It could be that you need to control the volume from the RS520 and then your amp is set to full volume. Or you do the reverse.

On the RS520 you have both SPDIF Out and TosLink Out. (The topping has SPDIF in and TOSLink In.
Did you try those?

With this configuration I use the RS520 both as an all in one for my TV setup where I don’t want to use the tubes on the Mcintosh setup, and as just a dedicated streamer/transport with the Topping D900 as a DAC, feeding the Mcaintosh side of things.

Let me try resetting the Rs520 - it’s strange that audio doesn’t remain fixed.

Also - does anyone know what’s up with the silver remote? When I hold the up/down volume button, the volume change doesn’t stop when I release the button, and sometimes accelerates to max volume which is terrifying. Any advice here?

Thanks

Ok… its kinda crazy…

I also had the same experience with the BT remote.
I’m not a huge fan because of the lag.

For me… I tend to use the RS520 via the app or use airplay where then the PC or phone becomes the volume control. LIke I’ve said in other threads… every product has some warts… and for me (and you) this is one of them.

W.R.T the volume control… I would think you’d want to use the RS520 for volume control and then turn up the McIntosh all the way and I’m assuming that the Topping is going to be full volume for line out.

When I had the RS 250, I also sometimes used an external DAC, and the volume was comparable to what I was listening to from the internal DAC.

My setup is as follows:
I have a Rose RS 151 connected via USB A cable, and its output is connected via this cable to the external DAC input on the CD player. There’s no way to adjust the external DAC’s volume. The volume is controlled through the app and is at 100% volume. It’s also quieter when I connect a coaxial cable in the same configuration.
I rarely use the external DAC, but when I do, I can sometimes listen. Today I’ll connect it to the second USB output on the Rose and see if that makes a difference.

Yeah this is a bit weird.

I noticed with my Onix Alpha (dongle DAC) if I set the buttons to control the flow of music (prev, pause, next) some devices will control the volume. However with the RS520, the volume is set to whatever I last set the DAC’s volume to be… like its not using Line Out full volume.

With my DAP, I can make it a USB DAC, then the 3.5mm is also SPDIF, so I can set that to Line out and then use SPDIF back into the RS520…

I wonder if the ISB Volume control should be turned on?

I’ve noticed that when I adjust the volume using the player’s output volume control, the dynamic range is comparable to that of the internal and external DACs. I don’t know why, but when the volume is adjusted from the tablet, there’s a difference in dynamic range depending on which DAC is used. Maybe it’s due to the XLR cables, as they’re known to have higher voltage. I’m also wondering why there’s a difference in the settings when I adjust the volume using the device’s output volume control. The settings on the device are twice as high as the ones shown in the app on the tablet. And every time I change them on the device, the settings in the app are twice as high. (Android)

That’s interesting.
W my mac the volume tracks…

The remote is still a weird issue but I write that off as being a BT remote.

To set your USB output to a fixed level, just go into your audio interface or mixer settings and turn off any volume controls for the USB output. Look for something like “USB output level” and set it to “Fixed” that way, the volume won’t change even if you adjust other levels.

Where can I find this setting? I don’t remember it being in the RS 151. Could you tell me the path, what to click, and where to look?
