I will (not) return my RS130…

If there were any kind of optimizations in there, you’d hope that rescan should be far less intensive than an initial scanning.

I just started another rescan. “Media scanning” is shown on the home screen (yes, some progress indication would be nice…) but Music still shows albums I already had in the library. Opening Rose Connect on the phone also still shows existing albums.

Makes me wonder if, when you start rescan from a mobile devices, they are wiping out the local copy of the database and wait for the Rose to finish scanning…

Could you post the duration time for your rescan (and the number of files of your network media library)? And yes, progress info would help much, at least within the app (in numbers, on the device screen probably better in %).

I can’t do exact timings, as I have to actually poke at the keyboard during the day, but roughly speaking, I started a rescan sometime after 9. Until 5 or so it was scanning the media. Then it was “DB Caching” for definitely under an hour. Completed with 52125 tracks stored on a Synology NAS. All successful and the device was operable during the scan.

This is still way too slow, especially as nothing had changed since previous time I rescanned (I bet I could do a faster scanner using stock Android SQLite for the database, if you point me at a metadata extractor. in a week), but it does work.

Thank you, this information is useful for me. This was for sure a rescan, not a new „first“ scan (delete, init DB first scan)?

That’s for less files the double scan time as in my setup for the first scan, which shows that my setup is OK and very fast. But for daily use I can’t use the rescan functionality which lasts forever.

That must be a SW bug from ROSE OS under certain cases. But sadly HiFi Rose doesn’t have their focus on the (since years and often criticized) known DB scan problems…

Yes, most definitely a rescan.

I would really want to see the database structure Rose uses. Mainraining a music collection has been a solved problem for decades, performance this bad could only have been achieved on purpose, but I can’t imagine what that purpose could be…

Could you please stipulate a concise query to the Rose team? Thus, both receive a reply to your assumption and possibly suggest a way forward that the Rose team didn’t think of before.

I think it has been asked many times already… Rewrite the music database part of the RoseOS to work at the performance level of e.g. BluOS or similar. BluOS, running on a WiFi connected speaker (priced at about $200) can scan and rescan my music collection well under an hour (a hardwired Powernode is of course even faster). And the music database has all the same functions of browsing by various criteria, queuing etc. With hardware being pretty similar (ARM processor, Linux…) there is no good technical reason for Rose to be that much slower. If there actually is one, they should give it to manage expectations.

Maybe they should check with e.g. JetAudio (I believe they are in Korea, too) developers, it can build a music database quite quickly on Android.

strong textI Thank for the info, i’have also an RS 130 ,and i’m not sure what to do with it.
I recognise some of your statements , but the Rose 130 owns also good properties.

On a positive note, from this perhaps atypical user: I love my RS130. Best streamer SQ I have had. The clumsiness of some parts of its software reassures me that this device is about SQ. Also, I do not need large database scans etc. Via the convenient samba option I convolute a classical composition or jazz album from my NAS, upsample it to DSD256 or DSD512 and copy it to RS130’s internal SSD. Fast enough and easy using JRiver. When playing it back I often disconnect the fiber ethernet. No remote app in this detached state, but glorious SQ.

I do this because this sounds way better than streaming audio over the network. I wonder why people spend so much money optimizing their network, when including it always remains a compromise.

The RS130 can do it all and is in my opinion a steal.
Needless to say, the screen of mine is always off…

Current setup is:
Mutec Ref10 SE120 clock > 75 Ohm > Rose RS130 > USB > fiber > USB > Audio-GD DI20HE DDC (also fed by the Mutec) > I2S > Leaf Audio CMD27 (incredible affordable DAC) > XLR > Audio-GD Vacuum HE1 preamp > XLR > Combak Reimyo KAP-777 amp > Fidelium speaker cables > Wolf von Langa SON speakers

Very intersting experience, and congrats to your High End setup!

And you are right, sound quality of RS130 is awesome.

So you think music from internal SSD sounds better as from Ethernet / NAS?

And upsampling of music files to DSD256/512 is also a sonic upgrade?

At least, further sonic upgrade by external (very expensive) clock?

Could you rank, which of the mentioned tasks improve sound quality most?

Try new Auralic Aries G2.2 and you will change your statement about Rose 130.
Almost same money and Auralic is better about everything.

hello. i agree with you. I just kick rose 130 from my setup and replace with Aries g2.2. Omg so much better now … The rose 130 is not HI-FI equipment at all… Returned today for full refund, so if someone need one for much cheap price, it can be find in ABT electronics soon.

Ok, because of your last posts I know that you are really unsatisfied with the software of the RS130, which is comparable with my experience. I had a Auralic Aries G2 for almost 5 years (I still have it at home). But the RS130 is soundwise significantly better as Auralic G2.

What is your experience ONLY soundwise between RS130 and Aries G2.2?
Please try to be objective and forget your bad software experience with the RS130, just compare sound. And could you describe the sound difference in detail?

I can return the RS130 within the next to days, but the price difference to Aries G2.2 is significantly (I paid for RS130 € 4.135, Aries G2.2 is € 5.999, that’s another price league).

But take your time, it’s Christmas…

hello. i agree with your statement about G2 vs R130. but in my opinion g2.2 is superior to both.
for me sounds more clear and more dynamic . the , horn, keys, drums, vocals, etc all have real standing in the presentation and i can heat them better . from the software point of view is like black and white . No problem with music stored in internal drive and super fast access to the drive when you want copy your stuff in to it . Build in EQ - we never get that in rose 130, and many other little things . unfortunately no i2s , the lcd still same size and no android support . but i still like it way better …

Is the grass always greener?
Here’s what an owner said in his review of the Aurulic Lightning software

Bad to Worse

The app has always been buggy and unreliable, losing access to the streamer and the music library regularly and freezing. However, in the last two weeks it’s got even worse; it now freezes totally and won’t control the streamer. Auralic … this is dreadful … it needs fixing properly and that clearly means a fundamental rewrite not a tinker at the edges. Other providers are able to deliver solid control apps … your hardware is great but the software is just not good enough."

i do not see any problems with the software … the only one problem for me is lack of support for android tablets…

Come on, you can always find something if you are searching for. And regarding software is Hifi Rose without doubt in Economy Class. The DB scan times are not acceptable, UI is worse to most other, bad translations and curiously different UI implementation between Android, iOS and Windows (with partly complete different translations), it looks like different development teams without coordination. And there is no real improvement within last years.

Otherwise look, build and sound is excellent. I am not sure if I should keep my RS130 or not, tomorrow I have to decide…

its your personal choice my friend. i was trying rose 3 times and always i was hoping to to keep it . And every single time when i was connecting that unit back to my audio setup i was finding more frustrating things. My final decision was when my friend bring to my place a brand new Aries g2.2 unit and when i decide to add ssd drive to rose and I discovered how slow is file transfer over the network … I will not even talk about DB scan. I also agree with you about poor customer support for rose and lack of bug fixes. But … this is your personal decision and you need to decide. Rose sounds good but what about other things??? this is 5K USD unit and should be perfect. this is why iam happy with Auralic unit.

Not sure how the prices are in Europe… i paid for brand new Aries g2.2 5K USD and rose 130 cost me 4,5k USD.

In Europe RS130 € 4800, Aries G2.2 € 6000
