I will (not) return my RS130…

> So you think music from internal SSD sounds better as from Ethernet / NAS?
Yes, no doubt, I compared many times.

> And upsampling of music files to DSD256/512 is also a sonic upgrade?
I am not saying that DSD is better than PCM as a format. However many DACs (like my current one) are more at ease processing DSD and this can be heard. A kind of aristocratic fluidness.

> At least, further sonic upgrade by external (very expensive) clock?
Yes, unmistakable. The RS130’s internal clocks are good but not great. This is of course to be expected as top notch clocks are very expensive and would drive the price up, beyond the reach of many…

> Could you rank, which of the mentioned tasks improve sound quality most?
First local playback, then external Mutec clock. Which is not to say that the latter is an insignificant step up.

Yup, it’s insane and pathetic.

The main reason, why I bought ROON some years ago is, that it is completely independent from the hardware I did not had back then. So my Roon is setup, and plays with my several devices (Rose RS150, RopieeeXL etc). And with todays devices - mainly all are 100% compatible with Roon.
I agree with you, that the Rose Software is a mess (still better than the Cocktail Audio I have before).

I had a Eversolo A6 here, which was a birthday present for my girlfirend (so only for testing).
Their Software was able to read and build the DB from my NAS in around 4 hrs (120000 Titles). Not as fast as my Roon, but it works and the software and App is ok for daily usage. The quality of the scan results depends (some Album are doubled due to CD1/CD2 or whatsoever, some Albumart was missing, even all my files are proper tagged with albumart in the file).
I still would like to compare my RS150 with the RS130 soundwise. The original software does not meet the built or sound quality - I agree here as well.

That’s some rather amazing thoght process that would lead one to assume that RS130 has any sound, that software affects it, or that turning the screen off improves it in any way.

But at least turning the screen off is free, so it’s not too bad as far as audiophile placebos go…

Boris, for sure there are sound differences also on streamers! I know you know it better, but let us silly ear believing junkies our believe, please and without posting another answer why we are wrong. We still know it…

I am still wondering why you use a rose streamer, there are much much cheaper offerings available, as you know they sounds all the same. Or has Rose something you like that you are willing to pay much more?

Sorry but hifi rose onlys childiren toys.

Software that was not taken into consideration and tested, ridiculous database problems and dozens of problems. I think they used us as guinea pigs when selling these devices.

If you believe this, why do you own one and why are you here? Seems it would just add aggravation to your apparent frustration. I’m going to try it for a while if it doesnt work out ill return it.

After a lot of frustration with the Rose Connect Apps (Android, iOS, Windows) I was willing to return the RS130 - control software / firmware of this device is not on par with the hardware.

But as a Roon lifetime owner I don‘t really need the Rose Connect Apps and can enjoy the excellent sound and build quality of the device. And that’s my main reason to keep the RS130. Additional I have interesting upgrade options (mainly external clock) for further improvements of the sound quality.

For all other users which have no working alternatives regarding control software, I can’t recommend the RS130. Read all the complaints in this forum and build your own oppinion.

When using ROON have you noticed that you cannot use music you have stored locally if you lose your internet connection? For instance, you have a hard drive attached or maybe even the SSD in the RS130. If you lose your internet connection ROON will not give you access to that offline content. This has been confirmed by ROON since the 2.0 update. It doesnt just apply to the RS130 tho. It’s Roon using any device/media. So just be aware of that

No, I don’t know, thanx for advise! But in the last 5 years of using roon I had never this worst case situation. And if this should happen unexpectedly, I will use Rose Connect (or reboot my Internet router…).

I have never used Roon and never will, as my classical and jazz ‘albums’ do not adhere to any commercial format. Still I am a happy RS130 user (see above). I have had almost 10 streamers, and this one is the best so far for my purpose (mainly SQ). Just saying…

Yes it is a worst case scenario but it applies to countries where internet isnt as rock solid.

Not sure what you mean to say…

@bodiebill
Soundwise the RS130 is a stunner. But the software is really bad for daily use, that is my main complaint and that’s why I would not recommend. If one can handle or accept this, go for the RS130.

Previously this was one of my favorite streamers or rather stand alone players.

I had to fiddle with SD cards and it only played wav and dff.
Compared to this I now have a Rose Royce

And the Earth is flat, because I can plainly see from my window that it is!

Sorry… You may perceive differences, but you might as well paint racing stripes on the streamer and believe that it would make transients faster. Neither would have any effect on sound waves.

“Don’t tell me that the Earth is round! I see that it is flat! Take your round Earth nonsense to astronomy forums!!!”

Yes, indeed. I like the looks, that it is a single box, seemingly well built, and for my use case, it works. I’d rather spend my spare time listening to music, not assembling something similar out of multiple boxes.

Had I needed something that can manage my local library well, I would have looked at different soluition…

There’s much gnashing of teeth about that in Roon forums. If your internet goes down, Roon might keep playing for some indeterminate amount of time, but that’s about it. Search etc. have all been moved to “the cloud.” That’s why they still let you get 1.8 which only needs to phone home once a month or so for license check… But in extremal situations like that you could use even Rose Connect. Or any number of UPNP systems to play to Rose if you turn DLNA on…

If they are commercial CDs, chances are Roon would handle them OK. If they are super-obscure though, it would take quite a bit of manual editing to get them into a decent shape in Roon…

Yes Roon 1.8 becomes unuseable after the first of the year I read

I use roon (without knowing the offline problems) sincr 5 years without any problems, and I am using it often. But that’s my experience, doesn’t mean Roon is bug free.

My setup: Rose RS130 (prior Auralic Aries G2) <> 1G Ethernet <> Netgear Orbi Wifi Satellit <> Wifi 6 AC <> Netgear Orbi Wifi Router <> 1G Ethernet <> 2.5G/10G Switch <> 1G Ethernet <> Roon ROCK server <> 1G Ethernet <> 2.5G/10G Switch <> 10G Ethernet <> Synology NAS.

The Wifi Bridge between the mesh system has thruput up to 80MB/s, the Synology NAS DS1621+ has 32MB RAM/2TB Read/Write Cache, 10GB network card. Read / Write speeds are around 1GB/s.

Using Roon Server on the Synology NAS works also very good, but I had build my i7 NUC before purchasing the new NAS, so I keep it at it is.

Not commenting on the shape of the earth, as this will certainly go nowhere…

But regarding ‘album’ formats:
For jazz my unit is a session, consisting of a certain date + certain personnel. This does most often not correspond one to one to any commercial issue.
For classical my unit is a single composition + performers + performance date. Here also, the correspondence with the commercial format is lost.
Both confuse Roon.

Was there an official announcement from Roon about that? I could have missed it, but I imagine it would have created a sh*tstorm in Roon forums…

No software is bug-free.

Yes, that would not be the normal use case for Roon. You could make it work, but whether it is worth the effort…
