Can I connect an iPad with a USB-C output to the RS250A (USB-B audio input) via a USB cable to listen to Apple Music without loss of quality? If not: Can I use a USB-C to Tosklink adapter to connect the iPad? Thank you!
Is your iPad a new or old iPad?
You should be able to do this.
I tested it w the iPhone, my iPad is an older model w the old connector so I donât have a good cable to try that. You need USB-B 2.0 connector to the RS250A.
Itâs an iPad Pro with a USB-C port. Iâd read online that Apple devices only offer limited support for the so-called USB Audio Class 2 mode as a host; devices like the RS250A would require a computer with the appropriate drivers and software (e.g. Audirvana, Roon, etc.). But I suppose I can just give it a go without breaking anything
iPad supports straight UAC2, so with an appropriate cable (either Lightning to USB-B or USB-C to USB-B, which will likely need an adapter) it. Higher rates, and especially DSD do need custom drivers (usually only available for Windows⊠sometimes built into Linux kernels) but something sane like 24/192 should âjust work.â
You will need a USB A to USB B (2.0 ) cable and then a USB C (Male) to USB-A adapter.
I have tried this w an iPhone and it worked. (Which is what I said earlier. )
The iPad shouldnât be any different since it would be using the same iOS version as the phone.
When I tested this w the iPhone⊠it recognized the Rose RS520 as if it were a pair of headphones.
Yes, it is possible to connect an iPad Pro with a USB-C port to the RS250A USB audio input and use it for Apple Music playback.
We recommend using:
- a USB-C to USB-A adapter
- together with a USB-A to USB-B 2.0 cable connected to the RS250A
Depending on the iPadOS version and Apple Music playback format, normal PCM audio playback should work properly through USB Audio.
However, please note that compatibility and supported playback specifications may vary depending on Appleâs iPadOS USB audio support limitations. Some high-resolution or special formats may not be fully supported by the Apple device itself.
Using a USB-C to Optical (TOSLINK) adapter may also work depending on the adapter specification, but USB audio connection is generally recommended over optical for better compatibility and audio quality.
Thank you! I have a USB-C to USB-B 2.0 cable. Will that work too? Or do I have to go through USB-A?
It should work, but these cables seem to be very rare (I wasnât able to find one when I needed it). As long as it does not have anything proprietary in it, it should work though.
I found this: Supra Cables USB 2.0 - USB-B to USB-C. Iâll try it out. Thank you!
It works. Can I see what resolution arrives at the rs250a? Is this the better way than airplay 2? I use apple musicâŠ
Gee Boris⊠I raised that issue a lot earlier in the thread.
Also raised it in a different thread because I was trying to find one so I could connect a PC to any Rose product since Rose standardized on the USB 2.0 connection. The solution was to plug in a USB A to USB C adapter which I wanted to avoid. You could make a custom cable but youâre the type who doesnât believe that cables matter.
The answer is yes a wired connection will be better than a wireless one in most scenarios.
(This is one of those.)
The Supra cable is an âaudiophileâ cable. Boris doesnât like those.
Looks like a well made but relatively expensive cable. 3X the price of a bog standard USB-A to USB-B plust the cost of an adapter.
But that will give you better sound quality.
Note that there is nothing wrong w Airplay2. Just a cable will be better.
It should show the source resolution/bit depth on screen.
Once again, mickey is talking about things he knows nothing about.
No better than a âbog standardâ but possibly better than Airplay 2.
Airplay gives you metadata display, which is Roseâs selling point⊠Audibly they may or may not be different
That would have done the trick, too.

Well then, youâre doing exactly the same thing I did back in the day. Itâs not exactly rocket science.
I had it on the 520 and everything went smoothly.

Oh, and by the way both Amazon and Microcenter (and our local electronics chain here) show them as very much available and in stock. Of course you need to know what to search for, but they are available now.
