What would that smell like? 
Anybody who has built things has wired something up incorrectly. It is a penetrating acrid smell that tells you two things 1) You made a mistake in wiring so your project isn’t working and 2) You are now going to have to find out how many things burned up in addition to the resistor…transistors make excellent fuses. They fry at the hint of too much current.
