RS130 sound quality is amazing!

Hi guys, I got my RS130 today, set it up with Ethernet and as a Roon endpoint ( ROCK as Server and Synology NAS as Data storage). It replaces my Auralic Aries G2 with Hoerwege PSU upgrade which sounds really great. The rest of my equipment is really high resolution oriented & optimized (Audioquest AC conditioning and cables, Mutec Reclocking, Genelec 8351B Studio Monitor).

But guys, after a few hours of warm up the RS130 sounds amazing! It’s soundwise so much better then my PSU tuned Auralic Aries G2, in almost every aspect. I can’t believe this because they are in the same price league, but not soundwise. So much more details, resolution, sound stage and depth, clarity, dynamics, bass and live feeling. It’s just a streamer - I am flashed, can’t be more happy. Build quality is also superb, but software much worse to Auralic, but I use Roon anyway, so I don’t care.

Other sound quality comparisons to the RS130?

Until you try Ethernet Switch with SFP (I use LHY SW-10) you will be surprised as how much improvement that you will get.

I just ordered RSA720 today (just made available today in the US). Hopefully, it will make some improvements for my DAC and local HDD.

Where did you purchase the RSA730 @Yu3319 ?

I bought from MoFi directly. Just e mail them or call them. $395 plus tax and shipping

That sounds interesting, probably I give a try later on. My signal path is fully digital from the RS130 via AES into Mutec Reclocker and the via AES directly into digital Input of my Genelec 8351B Monitor. Because the internal signal processing of the Genelec is 24/96 I resample everything to 24/96 within Roon (I have a standalone i7 based computer with ROCK installed, so plenty of CPU power).

So the RSA720 is not useful for me, because I use the AES digital path to my DAC inside the Genelec.

I ordered the SW-10 yesterday. Really eager to learn what that will do!

I use Finisar FTLF1318BTL 1G with good results.

You said “Until you try Ethernet Switch with SFP (I use LHY SW-10) you will be surprised as how much improvement that you will get.

Are you saying that you own the HiFi Rose RS130 and by adding an LHY SW-10 switch, greater audio improvement was achieved beyond what HiFi Rose RS130 provides? If so, please elaborate how your system is connected between your Router to the HiFi Rose RS130 and to the LHY SW-10 switch. Also, how is the LHY SW-10 switch connected to the HiFi Rose RS130?

In my experience the galvanic isolation provided by the SFP to SFP results in lower sound floor and improved SQ. Some may disagree this is possible, (e.g. Cables can’t make a difference, all DACs are the same, bits are bits, etc) but this is my experience. I run a Amazon.com: TP-Link TL-SG3210 v3 | 8 Port Gigabit Switch, 2 SFP Slots | Omada SDN Integrated | L2+ Smart Managed | IPv6 | Static Routing | L2/L3/L4 QoS, IGMP & LAG | 5 Year Manufacturer Warranty : Everything Else to the SFP port on the RS 130.

Also the type of SFP can make a difference, Nokia ones seem to outperform some of the others I have tried.

Step by step in last year i made several very nice improvements:
Copper to SFP adapter between router and switch, upgrade to audiophile switch SotM SnH10G which has 2 SFP slots. Power supply KECES-P6 which feed FritzBox router and SotM Switch.
So at least my RS130 was very “welcome”.

What output you are using coax, optical, or xlr?

  1. Which Nokia make are you using? https://www.nokia.com/networks/optical-networks/pluggable-coherent-optics-modules/
  2. Is Nokia Transceiver better than Finisar FTLF1318P2BCL SFP?
  3. Which Fiber Optical Cable Model/Make are you using?

Have not tried that one. I tested against CableMatters SFP and preferred the Nokia and have heard similar from others I trust. (not on this forum :P)

This one → https://a.co/d/g30TG47 I doubt a fiber cable will make a difference given it is fiber.

The Nokia (Lot (5) NOKIA FOUC 473842A.101 SFP+ 9.8GB SR 300M 850NM MMF MTRS-1A11-01 | eBay) you mentioned is SFP+. HiFi Rose RS130 has SFP (not SFP+).

SFP+ shouldn’t work. I’m puzzled.

Works fine in my RS 130 and connection chain Router – SFP to SFP on Switch - to RS 130.

FYI →

an SFP+ module will typically work in a regular SFP port, but with some limitations and considerations:

Key Points:

  1. Backward Compatibility: SFP+ modules are generally backward compatible with SFP ports. This means that you can insert an SFP+ module into an SFP port, and it should function, but it will operate at the lower speed supported by the SFP port (typically 1 Gbps).
  2. Speed Limitation: The most significant limitation is that the SFP+ module will be limited to the maximum speed supported by the SFP port, usually 1 Gbps. Even though the SFP+ module is capable of 10 Gbps, it will only operate at 1 Gbps in a regular SFP port.
  3. Power and Compatibility: Ensure that the SFP+ module you are using is compatible with the device into which you’re plugging it. While many modules are interoperable, some may have specific power or voltage requirements that the SFP port may not fully support.
  4. Firmware and Vendor Lock-in: Some networking equipment vendors lock their devices to only work with specific SFP/SFP+ modules. If you’re using third-party or generic SFP+ modules, make sure your equipment’s firmware supports it.

Summary:

  • Works? Yes, an SFP+ module will typically work in an SFP port.
  • Speed? It will be limited to the SFP port’s speed (usually 1 Gbps).
  • Concerns? Ensure compatibility with your specific equipment and check for vendor-specific restrictions.

If you are planning to use an SFP+ module in an SFP port, these are the key aspects to keep in mind to ensure proper functionality.

I don’t have direct connection to router, so I have to plug ethernet cable to bridge point, like Eero .

What do you recommend after to plus into RS130 for SFP?

@Bicycle I would recommend you use an SFP like the TP Link MC220L to connect to your Eero and from that to the RS 130. I’ve tried both a Cable Matters Amazon SFP and a Nokia one I found on eBay. I feel the Nokia one is slightly better. YMMV

Does it improve sound more than just using wifi from Rose device?

I don’t use WiFi and never compared it so I can’t say for sure if it sounds better than the WiFi.

From all I have read and experienced with other devices —> 1) Fiber > 2) Wired > 3) WiFi

In that order, in terms of sound quality. YMMV

I’ve ordered everything even hifi rose dac. So we will see soon! Many thanks for your advice sir
