Software volume control always on under USB output

With the current software and using USB output the Software Volume Control is on and the volume slider can be adjusted via the remote control regardless if the toggle switch sets the software volume control to on or off.

This is not the case for i2s, the software volume control when set to off and if you attempt to turn up or down the volume via the Hifi Remote or any other method you get “You can not adjust volume in the current output settings.”

Also when using USB output and even if I have software volume control set to off my DSD files are automatically converted to PCM. I suspect under the current software revision the Hifi Rose thinks the software volume control is set to on all the time regardless if it is actually set to on or off.

@ROSEHAN can you please confirm this behavior and get back to this group as quickly as possible because I suspect others are having the same issue as well. Please if you could respond and there are many other open questions that continue to go without responses from the group,

Thank you. @ROSEHAN @ROSELOA @moderators @mofidist

Can other users of the RS130 check their units and tell me if software volume control is “on,” when you are using the USB output regardless if you have set software volume control to on or off. Thank you in advance.

  1. Basically, if Software Volume Control is ON, volume control is possible on the Rose device.
If Software Volume Control is OFF, it is not possible.
    This applies to all outputs.
The default setting is OFF, but if Software Volume Control is set to ON even once for any output, it will not change until it is turned OFF again.
    (Factory reset is an exception)

  2. RS130 can turn Software Volume Control ON or OFF depending on the connected USB DAC.
First, you need to check whether the connected USB supports DSD.
If DSD is supported, how are PCM Resampling Frequency and DSD Mode set in Input/Output Settings → Output Settings (gear shape) → PCM Resampling Frequency and DSD Mode settings?

This issue occurs even when the the software volume control is showing that it is off. The volume slider can still be moved up and down. This does not happen over i2s. The volume is fixed and can not be adjusted.

I have DSD set to native but over USB it is always converted to PCM and I suspect it is due to the RS130 thinking software volume control is on even though it is showing on the screen as off.

I have never turned on software volume control but the unit somehow thinks it is turned on even though it is clearly off.

The operation of USB output and i2S output is different.

For USB output
It may vary depending on whether the USB DAC supports software volume control.
Basically, Hi-Fi audio products that support software volume control generate volume UI and can be adjusted regardless of the ON/OFF setting of software volume control.

However, even if software volume control is supported, in some models only UI occurs and the actual volume may not be adjusted. In this case, USB DAC information and compatibility confirmation is required.
(Please let us know the model of DAC you are using so we can check if the volume control is compatible.)

I have a few questions for you.

  1. When the software volume control is OFF and the volume is adjusted, does the actual volume increase or decrease?
  2. Please tell us the model name of the DAC you use. What model of Audio-GD dac do you use?
We will purchase the corresponding DAC and check whether the symptoms occur due to any problem when connecting to i2S. Your RS130 is not the problem, but Audio-GD dac and RS130 appear to be a compatibility issue when connected to i2S. Please understand even if it takes time.

While the volume slider does go up and down the volume does not adjust. That being said with the software glitch all DSD is converted to PCM which is, as you know, a normal behavior if a user has software control enabled in the Hifi Rose RS130, this is a very undesirable behavior as I want to listen to DSD in native format. I do have the RS130 set to Native DSD format but it is always converted to DSD because it thinks software volume control is on.

Audio-GD R-7HEmk3 (this is the newest version)

Thank you for your answer.

I immediately forwarded the email you sent to our software team and asked them to resolve it quickly.
We will notify you as soon as we receive a response from the software team regarding this matter.

Well looks like Steve Huff during his review even had issues with the USB port but was told Hifi Rose was implementing a fix to make his external DAC compatible. Did you fix his issue and is there a fix pending for my issue. I just can’t comprehend how a USB implementation can not be compatible like Steve and I experienced considering it is the most universal connection port between a DAC and a Source. @ROSEHAN
