Spotify Lossless update

Yes, I did make the Ripols. I really like them. They pair beautifully with the electrostatic speakers. Their bass is not overpowering - not Home Theater thumping but very, very musical.
When the crossover (MiniDSP) is properly adjusted you can’t tell where one speaker ends and another begins. Now I have the Lorica subwoofer and wow.

I got into the Poporis and Bacch through Jason.
Your guess was correct!

LOL…

Yeah… I keep seeing him at AXPONA. He was great in the Popori room answering questions and kept pushing the Bacch.

The Ripols are on my wishlist of speaker projects. One day if my wife stops spending me into the pour / poor house.

Smegel,

The only cure for my audiophile addiction I have found is to buy the new shiny (fill in the blank). However, the cure is only temporary. It only lasts until the next issue of The Absolute Sound when Robert Harley tells me what I can’t live without.

Its not like that for me.

I got the Rose RS520 because I wanted an AIO w a GaNFET amp to match my Mon Acoustic mini mons for my office. Saw a great deal on the RS520, and a lot of good reviews. Couldn’t find anything close.

If I do anything else… its going to be DIY for the speakers… or my Arcam Solo Uno dies and I need something for the living room.

I tend to be a run with it until it dies kind of guy.

Smegel,

The Rose RS 520 is a fabulous amp. I have two, one in another house. I bought them because their GanFET amps are wonderful.

Mon Acoustics are also a great choice. I haven’t heard them in person but they uniformly get outstanding reviews.

StandardModel

Yeah I love the RS520.
It does have some quirks.
Not happy about the Android 7.1 OS. (This is something Rose could fix but would cost $$$)
Also not happy w the wifi and bt dongle. (Easier fix if Android 7.1 supports PnP)
If they split them into two different dongles, they could do wi-fi 6 and BT 5.x.
(I’m using my MB20 for BT and ran a 50’ CAT 8 to the RS520.)

If I got a long USB-C to USB-B cable, I could then go from my desktop to the RS520 and the use the MIDI app to upscale along w getting Spotify lossless. Something to try.

If you’re going to AXPONA you should visit the Mon Acoustic room. They released upgraded versions of their speakers.

Also just saw a really nice pair of used magnepans over at Saturday Audio (they will also be on the first floor of AXPONA) They had a couple… one 20.1 and I think 2.7 .

Smegel,

Those are all good points.

The one issue that bugs me the most is a lack of a balance control.

I’ve never been to one of the big audio shows. I’m in. St louis so it’s not too far away. I went to Northwestern so I’m pretty familiar with Chicago. I’ve been thinking about going. Do you think it’s worthwhile?

StandardModel

That’s a tough one.
AXPONA is the largest show…
Getting a hotel room near the conference hotel would be harder… Its out in Schaumburg just past Woodfield Mall.

For me… its dealing w traffic.

If you’re looking for new gear… yes.
If you’ve got friends going… sure.

But there’s the cost of travel.

Mofi is HQ’d here in Chicago and they have a lot of reps at the show. (Mofi is the distributor for Rose in the US. )

Smegel,

Thanks, I know Schaumburg. I thought it wouldn’t be too bad, not being South of Rush Street but into the 'burbs. Does the show really fill up the hotels and cause a traffic jam?

StandardModel

Sorry there are two issues.

  1. Hotels in Schaumburg or in this case lack of them. If you rent a car, sure there are options in nearby burbs.

  2. Traffic in and out of Chicago.

This is more my issue.
I try to time my trip from the city to the burbs to miss the morning rush hour(s). So I end up getting to the show early and I can just sit around and catch up on emails and reading.

When I leave the show… I end up hitting traffic into the city. Usually not bad until you hit the merge by O’Hare. Then it clogs up. So it can take over an hour and a half to get home. Especially if there’s a Cubs game.

That’s why I don’t get a 3 day pass. Also there’s a lot of rooms I skip because I’m not into looking at $100K speakers that I would never own.

Last year I had to go back Sat night because I was buying a set of speakers at the show. Traffic home sucked but worth it.
