VU meters - input gain vs. output gain

Hi,

when I switch between input gain and output gain within the VU meter settings, I cannot recognize any influence on the shown VU meters. They always behave the same. Is this a bug of the firmware or did I get this feature wrong?

By the way, when changing the VU meter to the bargraph option (the last one), the respective VU meter does not do anything. Even the volume setting on the right hand side of the VU meter does not react.

Everything is fine with my 520.

The VU bar display is great and when I change the volume (RC, app or on the device) the dB display (right) in the VU bar display changes.

The input and output settings also work great for me. When I’m outputting, the pointers naturally creep more to the left in the display because I’m listening quietly. When the signal is input, you can see a nice dance of the pointers (up to 9.5 -10dB).

The Rose guys will answer tomorrow.

Strange.

Here, absolutely nothing happens.

Here, the VU meter works but without any difference between input und output gain.

And here you can see the firmware version installed on my RS520. As far as I know its the latest one? Or should I go for Early Access?

Thank you for your information. Hence, there must be something wrong with my device. Either hardware or software.

One additional question. I have used the VU meter with the HDMI eARC input and with the native Apple Music App. With both it does not work properly. Have you used other inputs or can you confirm that your VU meter even works flawlessly at least with HDMI?

I don’t have a subscription to Apple Music or Sotify, so I can’t say anything about that. I just read something in the chat…I don’t want to say anything wrong now (but some services, I didn’t support VU).

Maybe a chat member will read this and respond.

Otherwise, write to the Rose guys directly

I stream via Roon and the VU meters are active there.

The VU also works in the RosePremium app (Apple), whether via Tidal or Qobuz or your own music (SSD at the bottom of the 520).

When I turn on my TV, I have the Rose display on the TV and can turn on the Vu’s on the 520. The VU’s don’t work on the TV.

I use HDMI out. to the TV and Toslink for sound from the TV to the 520.

Thanks for your information. I will contact the guys from HiFi ROSE directly.

The VU meters do work with HDMI eARC and Apple Music (natively used on the RS520), but there is no difference between input gain and output gain. And as I mentioned, the bargraph VU meter does not work at all. In addtion, the VU meters do not work when playing music over AirPlay 2. But this is no bug.

If it works (from the start), like with my 520, you don’t have to worry about that.

I don’t use AirPlay either, I don’t need a €3700 device for that.

The Rose moderators will answer you and then you’ll be wiser. Of course, it would annoy me too, but as you said, everything works for me.

But with mine it doesn’t. So I have to worry about it.

Yes, I guessed that.

Your concern is justified…not that they sold you junk…

…and I meant: If everything works, like it does for me, you don’t spend much time on the subject…

Sorry guys for irritating you, but I have to admit that the VU meters do work at least better than I mentioned.

  1. There is a difference between input gain and output gain at least with the native Apple Music App. And I expect with other inputs as well. However, with HDMI eARC the difference is hardly noticable (if there really is one). And when using Apple Music via AirPlay 2, the VU meter still doesn’t work; independent upon the selection of input or output gain.

  2. The bargraph VU meter works when input gain is selected.

However, when set to output gain or when HDMI eARC is used as input, I still cannot see any kick impuls of the bargraph.

I confirm…the VU bars are zero for me too, but the dB display on the right works when I turn it up/down.

I changed the VU meter settings (output) especially for you.

So: Long story short. It doesn’t work for me either and I suspect your VU’s aren’t broken.

Oh, you just posted that…when I sent you the pictures, you didn’t mention anything about it (that the VU bars don’t work for the output speaker).

So, I’m out and in front of the TV.
