This is on the RS520 but may be the same for other devices.

I normally have software volume control turned off.
So when I plugged in my ONIX Alpha dongle DAC into the USB out, so I could use headphones…
I got 100% volume and when the music came on… poof. Blew a channel on my headphones and probably a little damage to my ear…

It was my bad and my fault. Stupid mistake.

The software volume control allows you to set the volume instead of line out.
On the dongle dac, rather than let the dac control the volume, I used the phone so its set to full out.

So I killed my headphones… :anguished:

Even if you’re the best in the YT Academy, mistakes happen. I hope that your anatomical system, which combines two independent sensory organs, is doing well. Otherwise, listen to 520.

The reason I posted this because it was a brain dead mistake.
Now I have to spend a couple hundred on something I wasn’t planning to spend money on.
Of course since the Mac Studio 5Ultra is delayed… not too bad.

And there are a lot of options out there.

Again the reason I raised this issue is that

  1. You can potentially damange your headphones or other gear because you’re not expecting full volume on the output

  2. You could potentially harm your hearing.
    Well most people. I doubt you could…

There was another thread a while ago where someone asked about the purpose of this setting.
Now if you’re not using the RS520 to feed other things… and you want your AUX to be line out… then its ok to not turn on software volume controls.

The downside is that I really liked the Eris headphones… which are currently sold out but may be coming back. There’s a used pair of Poseidon s for sale and if I can get them at a good price… it would be a good replacement. Of course there are other options.

But if I do the Poseidon s, I could also pick up the Schitt dongle dac which is $99.00 and has gotten good reviews.

So I have a 520 and am curious about this issue.
Question 1. Why do you need to use a dongle dac for the headphones from the output?

Question 2. Are you saying that if software volume control is not in that the output is max volume? Can’t that be manually controlled using the analog dial/switch?

I am just trying to learn here so forgive me for my lack of understanding and questions. Reason for asking g as well is I am getting ready to use a phono preamp with the input and I’m wondering how that volume will be controlled. I just purchased a Ifi Zen 3 and looking to set it up properly to avoid any problems.

Ok, first the RS520 doesn’t have any headphone jacks so you need an external device like a USB dac/dap or a headphone amp.

If you don’t explicitly turn on software controlled volume… these output devices will be set to full audio. Only your speakers will have controlled volume.

If you’re hooking up a phono pre-amp, that going to be an input device which will be line in.

This issue is only on volume output.

Ok I see the issue with not having a headphone jack. I was looking at some phono preamps that do have them and this way you could listen using the jack on that amp so was wondering if that’s the same for volume but I guess it would be limited to the music input/output from the turntable. Duh :roll_eyes:

Thank you for the run down! I ended up getting a Ifi Zen 3 phono amp and am using it now to add turntable.

So far it seems to work fine.

Good evening.

I just had power outage today but Rose was not turned on and playing. I just turned it on and it was playing streaming music from tidal. Then, it all of a sudden shut down. I tried to turn it back on and no luck. I tried the reset button on fuze and no luck either. Does that indicate the fuze is done?

Was the Rose in stand-by mode? Or was it completely turned off?

I don’t know what could be wrong this is a question for @ROSEHAN

Yes I am not sure. I am assuming it was in standby mode as I can turn it on with phone or remote.

If you can turn it on w the phone, it was in stand-by mode so it was ‘on’. So it could have been hit by a surge when the power came back on. (Assuming you didn’t have it on a surge protector or anything like that.

While waiting for Rosehan to respond… try unplugging it from the wall, wait a couple of minutes and then plug it back in…

Also maybe try to do a factory reset if you can get it to stay on long enough.

Yes here is what I have done so far:

I tried reset button and nothing.
I unplugged it and waited for a while then plugged it back in.
I also saw a note on google that said press and hold power button for ever lol then turn it on.
That worked and then after three amazing Jimmy Smith songs it turned off again to my demise.

I sent a note to Rosehan to see what they say. Good thing is I bought it less than a year ago so it should still be warranty worthy.

While its likely something got fried from the power surge, you can try one last thing…
After letting the system sit unplugged, when you plug it back in… try a system reset to factory defaults.

Still since its under warranty, contact your local store where you purchased the device from.

Ok I got some rest and now unplugged speaker cables and power etc. I plugged the power cable back in and got it to start up. I immediately did a factory reset and now connected everything back to normal. She is up and running for at least 10 minutes. I think I am in the clear for now. It may have a corrupt cache of streaming files from what I have read. The factory reset seemed to do the trick. Thanks again for your feedback. It helps to learn from others and get advice.

This is the info I got from web search. The [HiFi Rose RS520] runs on a heavily customized version of Android called RoseOS . High-resolution streaming applications like Tidal heavily leverage the system’s processor cache to buffer files. If an update patch or a metadata stream gets corrupted inside that cache, it can trigger an ongoing internal operating system loop (essentially a “kernel panic”). The hardware sees this massive, unvitals CPU spike as an internal fault and cuts the main power relay to protect itself. The Factory Reset completely wiped out those corrupted background caches, cleanly restarting the software layer. Robert

Great that it worked.

Not sure if you have your Rose RS520 plugged in to a surge protector… but at a minimum, you should look into that.

All of my electronic gear that I care about has some form of surge protection or power conditioner / battery backup which can protect your systems.

Fingers still crossed that it is fixed.

Yes it’s all connected to surge protector and a filter from ifi to reduce interference from noise and EMI.
