Which software is the longest-lasting for a hifi streamer?

In the world of hi-fi, the longevity of a streamer’s software is measured by the stability of updates over time, consistent support for streaming service APIs (which are constantly evolving), and independence from specific hardware. Which do you think is the most durable? Android, Linux , BluOS or ?

In our view, the long-term durability of a streaming platform depends less on whether it is based on Android, Linux, BluOS, or another operating system, and more on the manufacturer’s ability to continuously maintain and evolve the software.

Streaming services regularly update their APIs, authentication methods, and feature sets. As a result, long-term stability is primarily determined by ongoing software support, timely updates, and a flexible software architecture that can adapt to these changes.

At HiFi ROSE, we continue to invest in software development and platform maintenance to support evolving streaming services, improve functionality, and enhance the user experience throughout the product lifecycle.

Ultimately, no platform remains sustainable without continuous support, regardless of the underlying operating system. We believe long-term commitment to software maintenance is the most important factor in ensuring product longevity.

Can only speak from my own experience, so please don’t take this as the last word on the subject.

BluOS has been around since 2013. I purchased one of their first products, the original cube shaped Bluesound Node (now designated the Node N100) back in 2014, and it is still running strong.

Roon has been around since 2015, and I’ve been a Roon user since 2019. The Roon Nucleus I acquired in 2019 is still running strong. I run my Rose RS130 as a Roon endpoint, and run my Bluesound kit and Kef LSXII as Roon endpoints as well.

What both BluOS and Roon have in common are continual updates to help keep them current.

I’m sure there are other products and operating systems that can make the same claim, as well as a number of others that have fallen by the wayside.

Just my 2 cents.

Buying a Bluesound Node N100 in 2014 and seeing it still working today, in 2026, means it has surpassed 10 years of continuous service. In the world of streaming and consumer electronics, this is an exceptional milestone.

SlimDevices SlimServer (2001), designed from the start as an open source music server, allowing it to be continually updated, additionally with the ability to use plug ins. A brilliant piece of SW engineering that has stood the test of time through the ownership by Logitech (Logitech Media Server - LMS), and even after Logitech stopped making the streaming devices it continues as Lyrion Media Server. UPNP/DLNA capable for going on 15 years or longer. IMO HiFi Rose would have been better off using this as the basis for its steaming SW solution, and just built whatever plug ins that felt they needed for Rose unique functionality. I think the only limitation it may still have is in not being able to play DSD directly. But I could be wrong about that.

Mmh, for an end user Lyrion is a great software, but not for a pen tester, because it’s overall perl spaghetti code…
DSD is supported with plugins and directly with the Daphile fog.

Great builded and supported is the lumin firmware (I know the chief developer). Also the first model (A1, which was the first streamer that supports DSD) get until yet Software updates.

Of course, more code mathematically means more bugs that a penetration tester can exploit.
