As the owner of an RS151, here are my impressions after one month

Hello everyone,

Let me introduce myself. I am 64 years old and live in southern France.
I have been retired for two years. I was an IT manager and developer for 42 years.

I am the administrator of France’s largest hi-fi forum https://forum-hifi.fr, and am also a member of several hi-fi and home cinema forums, such as www.homecinema-fr.com.
My username is the same as here.

I am passionate about hi-fi and home cinema, but unfortunately I only have a living room, so I have to make do with that.
I have had a Rose RS151 for a month and a half.
Several people I know are interested in the RS151, but for the moment I can’t recommend it because they have questions that I don’t know the answers to.
I have had several streamers in recent years, in order:
Oppo Sonica
Primare SC15
Primare PRE35
Atoll ST300 signature
Eversolo DMP-A8
Auralic Altair G2.1

I have a Keces S300+ power amplifier and Récital Audio Illumine speakers.
So I have over 20 years of experience with hi-fi and home cinema equipment.
I’ll give you my impressions and wishes.

The RS151 is a superb device, both in terms of its appearance and its performance.
It’s the best device I’ve ever had in terms of sound quality :
Very dynamic and well-defined without being clinical.
Tight and controlled bass.
Detached and natural human voices.
High frequencies that reach high but are never aggressive.
The very high-quality sound reproduction exceeded my expectations, especially since it replaced a much more expensive Auralic Altair G2.1.

Comfort and usability:

  • Superb touchscreen
  • Beautifully finished chassis
  • Simple but adequate remote control
  • Good menu ergonomics
  • Super-fast start-up in less than 5 seconds
  • Lots of inputs and outputs
  • All online audio services
  • Real-time synchronization of creations, modifications, or deletions of files or folders stored on the SSD drive.

Missing features:
1 - The ability to set the volume to maximum on the analog input when using a home theater system.
Since there is no bypass function that would allow me to connect the front outputs of a home theater amplifier to the analog inputs of the RS151, I am forced to set the outputs to 12 dB (max) on my home theater amplifier and set the level to 55 on the analog input of the RS151.
Why 55? Because if I listen to hi-fi the next day, the volume of the RS151 would be at 55, and if I set it higher, I would risk damaging my speakers if, for example, I played a rock song.

It is certainly possible to adjust the volume of all inputs, but you can only play between -10 dB and 0 dB.
Ideally, it would have been better to allow more dB on the analog input or to have maximum volume for consistency with the home theater section.
It would have been great to be able to save the volume levels for each input. In that case, I would have set the analog input to 100, which would have allowed me to set the outputs on my home theater amplifier to 0.
Many people on forums don’t understand why there isn’t a real bypass function on the analog input, which would allow the RS151 to be used in a home theater setup and which is found on competitors’ products such as Eversolo, Lumin, Auralic, Atoll, etc.
2 - The ability to set a maximum volume level to avoid mishandling the remote control or smartphone volume button.

3 - The ability to set a volume level at startup.

These two features are very important, and they were present on all my previous devices.
They serve to protect the speakers from excessive volume that could damage them.
Imagine that in the evening I listen to classical music at a volume of 60/65, and the next day I listen to a pop or rock song. The sound will be too loud, with a risk of damage to the speakers.

Two simple new settings would be welcome: maximum volume and start-up volume.
It’s software, so it shouldn’t be difficult to implement.

4 – The ability to assign a button on the remote control to turn the screen on or off, because the app requires a lot of manipulation.

5 – The ability to view the SSD drive with another application such as BubbleUPNP or Hificast, but unfortunately the RS151 is not visible to these applications, even though they can see the shortcuts created on the RS151 that point to a NAS server.

Points for improvement:
1 - With an SSD hard drive, it should be possible to highlight the track being played in the folder view without having to go through the playlist view, because if I start with the 7th track in that folder, when I switch to the playlist view I won’t see the first 6 tracks and will therefore have to juggle between views to play the previous tracks.
2 - Ideally, there should be a scroll bar at the bottom that displays the progress of the track with a cursor that allows you to move through time.
3 - In a folder where there is only one album, sometimes the covers don’t match when they should be the same.
4 - The ability to display either the file names or the tags.
5 – The overall ergonomics of the application; too many steps are required.
6 – A shortcut in the application to directly access playback from a folder located on the SSD without having to click on: Music → Directory → ROSEDISK → File folder.
7 - Be able to reduce the display brightness even more, make it more dimm for late night sessions.

Areas for improvement :
1 – With an integrated hard drive, when restarting or after booting up, the drive is not immediately recognized, even though it is clearly visible in the multimedia manager.
This same drive is recognized without any problems on several PCs.
I think that analyzing the content takes too long because sometimes it appears tens of minutes later.
I have about 10,000 files and 600 folders on the SSD.

2 – The search function on the SSD using an artist name, album name, song name, or folder name does not work, which is really inconvenient.

3 - There is also a problem with playlists.
I created five, but only two appear in Music → My Music → My Playlist.
However, in Home → My Playlist, there are five.
Why is this ?

Until I have these answers, I cannot praise the merits of this device on all the forums I am registered with.
This could affect hundreds of people who are potentially interested in the RS151.

I had everything translated by DeepL because I am not fluent in English, so please bear with me and feel free to ask me questions if anything is unclear.

Thank you in advance.

LOL…
Sometimes what you think would be simple… isn’t.
(cough, Spotify lossless, cough cough.)

I agree that while they do some things right… they miss the mark on others…

I think the issue is that Rose has a small team of developers so they are going to be slower in doing implementation and roll outs.

Also I noticed that you had the Eversolo DMP A8.
Just curious how you would compare your experiences.

Thx.

PS. I’m using Firefox as my browser. There’s a feature where if you highlight the text you can get it to translate it for you.

LOL…

Hello Smegel,

I can’t make a direct comparison between the DMP-A8 and the RS151 because after the DMP-A8 I had the Auralic Altair G2.1.

The improvement was significant on all levels, but I would say that’s to be expected given that the Altair costs almost three times as much as the DMP-A8.
Finesse, better bass control, presence, separation of instruments, emotion.

And since I think the RS151 is superior to the Altair, that means the RS151 is far superior to the DMP-A8.

Thanks for the Firefox tip

Your points are shurely valid.
What I see is, that the missing HT-passthrough is your main thing.
You’d also the Primare PRE35 (I’m a great fan from Primare) and also here you can’t set a gain for the HT-passthrough (discussed this with Terry from Primare intensivly), which I’d need. So I’ve gone back to my Amp-Switch from Dodocus and using dedicated amps for stereo und multichannel. This is for me the better sounding solution.
For the Rose RS151 I’m not sure, that the analogue in (I don’t use any of my four Rose devices as PreAmp) will work without AD conversion and so I would never use it as passthrough for HT.

Some other points (in searching your library) should solved with the new EA firmware (I’ll wait until the final release comes).
Indexing local files isn’t really fast (only a bit slower than eversolo’s implementation), but much better than one or two years ago.
IMHO you get the best results with all Rose streaming products in using it as Roon endpoint.

Thank you Burki for your feedback. I’ll wait for Hifi Rose’s answers, hoping they arrive…

It’s been six days since I created my thread on the RS151.
I asked questions and I’m waiting for Rose to answer them.

How is it possible that no one from Rose’s team has responded?

Are the answers too complicated, or is it not your problem?

@ROSEHAN @Rose_love, please answer me on all points.

Thank you.

That’s one of the problems with Hifi Rose.
You’ll get what you get, but you can’t expect that problems will solved soon or that you get expected new features.
If you want a real good support, go to Lumin or even Matrix Audio is much more progressive than Hifi Rose in the software/firmware part.

It could be much simpler. To remember selection for each input or for at least overall. For example I requested a feature to turn off the screen for hdmi input automatically. I dont see any reason why would anyone want screen on while watching TV. Hope that they will add just option to remember previous selection for input. BTW i requested it in august, still dont have it

Not a disaster, but some silly things, which could be done pretty fast on android take a lot of time. Maybe at one day they will do open source for these devices, so i will take care of these changes by myself, for at least UI part.

Yes Burki, now I understand, but it’s too late

Cooler it’s good idea !

Your problems can disappear. Buy the DMP-A10. I used the RS150B for 4 years.
I switched to EverSolo three months ago. Rose HiFi doesn’t even come close to 30% of the EverSolo Control app. And the build quality and sound of the DMP-A10 are world-class.

I have an RS151, not an RS150. It’s the model above, which should work just as well as the DMP-A10, if not better.
Let’s compare like with like.

@Razmote
First, I’ll answer the questions below. I’ll review the rest and respond.
Music’s playlists only display playlists created by Music, so they appear as two.
Home’s Playist also includes playlists containing tracks from other apps, so they appear as five.
You can check them by clicking the playlist icon below.
Check the “All” or “Music” icon.

3 - There is also a problem with playlists.
I created five, but only two appear in Music → My Music → My Playlist.
However, in Home → My Playlist, there are five.
Why is this ?

Thank you Rose_love, but the five playlists were indeed created by Music, as can be seen in the screenshots.
These playlists contain files on the RS151’s internal SSD.

@Razmote
In the case you mentioned, it seems like the playlist was added from the integrated queue, not from the music app.
When adding a queue from the integrated queue screen, it was registered as “all” and is currently under review.
Thank you.

Here’s what I did for the five lists:
Music tab -> Folder -> RoseDisk -> my music folder -> select a file -> add to a playlist.

The five playlists were populated in the same way.

As proof, I was able to see them at one point in Music -> My Playlists, but they have disappeared and I can add tracks from the internal drive at any time.

I can guarantee that the same method was used for all five cases.

I can make a video showing how I do it.

Thank you for your help.

If you want a comparison, buy a DMP-A10 and compare it to the RS 151. :yum:
Then you can form an opinion. For now, it’s just your guess.

@Razmote
We are planning to release a fix for the issue where “All” is automatically
registered when adding music tracks in the Integrated Queue.
However, we are still unable to identify the cause for other reported cases.
We apologize for the inconvenience, but could you please provide a video recording of the issue being reproduced? Additionally, we kindly request a screenshot of the track information where “All” is displayed under Home > My Page > Playlists.

Thank you.

Its funny, but I like the clock interfaces over going dark. (display off)

@Razmote
We apologize for the delayed response.
First of all, thank you for using Rose products and for providing such valuable feedback and detailed suggestions for improvement.

Due to the detailed nature of your inquiry and the need for attachments like photos, it is difficult to provide a full response here on the community platform. Therefore, we will be sending a formal reply to your registered email address (razmo**@free.fr**) within this week.
Thank you for your patience.

@Rose_love thank you !

Thank you for the after-sales service, which is just as important as the product itself.
If you like, I can make a video to show you that a playlist created from MUSIC is not visible in MY PLAYLISTS.

If you could also answer my other questions, especially the ones that are blocking me, that would be great.
