Pop Sound over i2s with RS130

Hello @ROSEHAN and @ROSELOA and Hifi Rose users,

I am getting a slight “pop,” sound when I am using Qobuz over i2s to my Audio-GD dac via i2s and the A profile. The A profile is compatible with my DAC. This only happens over i2s and not USB. It happens when a sample rate changes or when I pause the music and resume or when I manually switch from one music track to another. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

You might have to change the DSD or PCM to something lower rate, like 192 or DSD 128, depending on your DAC.

@duffer5

We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

There seems to be a problem when using i2S output.
Please check a few things.

  1. When using i2S output, does the same pop noise occur not only with Qobuz music sources, but also with radio, Rosetube, Tidal, etc.?
  2. Is it the same when playing music from an SSD or USB external hard drive?
  3. Where does pop noise come from? Speakers or DAC?

The pop sound occurs when playing Qobuz, Tidal and with my internally installed SSD. It happens when I pause the music, advance the music manually or when a sample rate changes.

The Pop comes from my speakers.

This does not happen over USB only over i2s.

The HDMI profile for my DAC is exactly that of Profile A in the Hifi Rose so it is compatible.

I know other users had like issues with like issues with the rS150b so I would appreciate any insight on how to resolve.

@ROSEHAN can you test this behavior in house and tell me if the software volume is set to off but the volume slider works regardless of the software volume setting?

@duffer5
The operation of USB output and i2S output is different.

For USB output
It may vary depending on whether the USB DAC supports software volume control.
Basically, Hi-Fi audio products that support software volume control generate volume UI and can be adjusted regardless of the ON/OFF setting of software volume control.

However, even if software volume control is supported, in some models only UI occurs and the actual volume may not be adjusted. In this case, USB DAC information and compatibility confirmation is required.
(Please let us know the model of DAC you are using so we can check if the volume control is compatible.)

I have a few questions for you.

  1. When the software volume control is OFF and the volume is adjusted, does the actual volume increase or decrease?
  2. Please tell us the model name of the DAC you use. What model of Audio-GD dac do you use?
    We will purchase the corresponding DAC and check whether the symptoms occur due to any problem when connecting to i2S. Your RS130 is not the problem, but Audio-GD dac and RS130 appear to be a compatibility issue when connected to i2S. Please understand even if it takes time.

@ROSEHAN

  1. When the software volume control is OFF and the volume is adjusted, does the actual volume increase or decrease?

While the volume slider does go up and down the volume does not adjust. That being said with the software glitch all DSD is converted to PCM which is, as you know, a normal behavior if a user has software control enabled in the Hifi Rose RS130, this is a very undesirable behavior as I want to listen to DSD in native format. I do have the RS130 set to Native DSD format but it is always converted to DSD because it thinks software volume control is on.

  1. Please tell us the model name of the DAC you use. What model of Audio-GD dac do you use?

Audio-GD R-7HEmk3 (this is the newest version)

@duffer5

Thank you for your answer.

I immediately forwarded the email you sent to our software team and asked them to resolve it quickly.
We will notify you as soon as we receive a response from the software team regarding this matter.

Hello, any updates on this?

@duffer5

This is a problem that will take some time. First of all, we have a compatibility issue between Audio-GD R-7HEmk3 and RS130, but we think it may be a problem with Audio-GD R-7HEmk3, not a problem with RS130. We can’t just buy the Audio-GD R-7HEmk3 easily. If we think that it is a problem with the RS130 after checking the specifications and various other things in our software department, we can raise a draft and purchase it. The software team has been running out of time during recent updates.
We would appreciate it if you could take some time and wait.

Hello, I have the same problem when listening DSD files in particular , a huge Pop Sound over i2s with RS130, my dac is Rockna Wavedream, it pops when I change the song from dsd to dsd, from dsd to flac, when I play any dsd song. If I listen to flac or tidal or qobuz, AND if I put the song on pause, it sends a false dsd signal that DAC, because on the screen of the dac it shows dsd128.

Nice setup. Yes, issue persists with my system as well and no resolution pending. Not sure what to do.

Thank you, I hope Hi-fi Rose will solve the problem, since we have the same problem on different dacs, it means something from Rose if not, unfortunately I will give up the RS130. I also had problems with the SSD installed inside. many times after stopping or restarting the RS130 it no longer recognized the ssd drive

I agree. More folks will be coming forward soon with similar issues as more RS130’s are sold and varied DACS are attached.and present with issues

Looks like more and more people are having this popping issue. This makes me, @GeorgeLor and @Tony22 @jefcrouch nd a few others. Is there a fix underway @ROSEHAN.

Maybe… just use a connection actually designed for inter-device communication, rather than a useless hack that does not even have a standard connector, let alone a pin-out?

In the meantime, I also talked to the CEO of Rockna, he told me that the problem is because between songs in DSD and not only the streamer transmits zeros, which in PCM means 0V and in DSD full scale - something that the Rose technicians don’t took into account when they made the software

Hello everyone, everything works for me via I²S without any problems.
But I have an I²S-cable specially made by Tubulus for my RS130 and my DAC.

So it can’t be a fundamental problem with the RS130.

Greetings

I doubt it has anything to do with the cable (although that’s a good cable - I have the exact same one along with an Audioquest Dragon). It’s something in the way a particular streamer (or server) and a particular DAC work together. I’m a beta tester for one audio company’s digital equipment. Been testing FW releases on their past two or three models. There’s a small team of us. We’ve gotten enough group experience to see that problems like this are equipment related.
