Randomly, but on average, once in 10 times, the RS130 doesn't output music to the RD160

@ROSEHAN

Hello ROSEHAN,

I recently purchased the Rose RS130 and RD160 Hifi pair. I’ve noticed a random problem that I can describe to you, but which may seem quite difficult to resolve.

I use an HDMI cable for an I²S connection between my RS130 and my RD160:
https://www.homecinesolutions.fr/p/21127-audioquest-hdmi-vodka-48gbps-0-6m

Randomly, but on average, once in 10 times, the RS130 doesn’t output music to the RD160, and I get a message telling me to check my RS130 In/Out connections. Without doing anything else, if I turn the RS130 off and then back on, it works normally again, and the sound is sent to the RD160.

This morning, I had the same problem again and checked the RS130’s In/Out configuration. The configuration was correct, but I had no sound coming from the RD160.
On the In/Out screen of the RS130, at the I²S output configuration level by clicking on Mode B then on Mode A connection brought the sound back to the RD160.

What do you think is going on?

Can you report this issue to the technical team so they can tell me what I can do to make my configuration more stable?

@domrol

Here are a few things to check:

  1. Do you experience the same symptoms when using a different cable?
  2. How long is the USB cable you’re using? We recommend using the shortest cable possible.

We’ll also check the specifications of your HDMI cable and see if you experience similar symptoms.

Hello,

I’m using the I²S Mode A connection with this 60cm cable: Audioquest HDMI Vodka 48Gbps 0.6m

This is this connection between the RS130 and RD160 gave me the best audio results.

" I²S and AES/EBU: These are direct digital audio interfaces designed for very low jitter and stable clock synchronization.
They are traditionally considered the most “pure” audio connections between a digital transport (RS130) and DAC (RD160), and this is why our team often recommends them in demonstrations. "

The problem is getting worse and now appears every other time…

I turn on a radio, it won’t play the radio, and I get no sound.
I have a message on my RS130’s screen: “Check the input/output settings”.

Here’s the error message that appears on the screen:

Every time for solve this issue :
On the RS130 In/Out screen, in the I²S output configuration, by clicking on the Mode B connection then on the Mode A connection brought the sound back to the RD160.
But it is not normal that RS130 lose the connexion with RD160.

What can I do ?

@domrol
Thank you for your prompt reply, I sent an email to you

Thanks, I answer you.
Is a problem whith I²S betwwen RS130 and RD160 ?

@domrol

We are currently investigating this issue.
We will respond to your email as soon as we have it.

Additionally, I would like you to submit your inquiry either via email or on the HiFi Rose forum.
I have a problem where my email address and your forum nickname do not match.

“I have a problem where my email address and your forum nickname do not match.” :

What does it mean ?

@domrol

When you post to both email and forum at the same time, I can’t tell if it’s the same person or not, so please let me know in one of the two.

Ok, it was me latest times in particular to respond to your emails.

Is a problem whith I²S betwwen RS130 and RD160 ?

What can be the cause of my random problems with this type of connection ?

I use a Logitech Harmony Elite remote and my RS130/RD160 are operated via a Remote Activity (the RS130/RD160 IR commands are stored there). I turn on and put my RS130/RD160 to sleep via Logitech Harmony Activity.

Regarding HDMI protocol, should I turn on the RS130 first or the RD160 first?

I reversed the RS130/RD160 wake-up order, and I’m having the same issue with the I²S connection being lost between RS130 and RD160.

I’m having the same connection loss issue with a coaxial S/PDIF connection.
After waking up the RS130 a few times, I get the error message:
“Check input and output settings.”

I am then forced to put my RS130 on standby and then take it out of standby to recover the sound!

See below for a screenshot of my RS130 displaying the error.

How far have you come in resolving my problem?

@ROSEHAN

Please, can you help me?

@domrol

We have confirmed the same symptom on our side as well.
We are currently working on fixing this issue.

Once the fix is verified, we will release an update immediately.

Thanks for your answer.
I hope this fix come very soon.

Please, can you already tell me if the cause comes from software or hardware ?

Sometimes the problem arrives only after twice usage (twice startup).
The last was arrived on the RS130 after about twenty of use.

@domrol

Thank you for your prompt reply, I sent an email to you

Thank you, ROSEHAN. I received your email.

  1. Can you confirm that this fix has indeed fixed the random sound loss on startup of the RS130 that was noted by the technical team?
  2. Do I need to first install firmware 5.9.07 on my RS130 before installing the fix?
  3. Will this fix be retained in future updates?

Thank you for your replies.

Sincerely,

It seems that I have the exact issue here as well, altough with a different configuration.

I use the RD160 together with my Eversolo DMP-A8. Connected by I²S, different HDMI cables (30cm, 60cm and 100cm). The RD160 is switched on/off by 12V trigger.

Same as domrol, every 10th time or random, there is just no music…the Eversolo does not give me an error message, but it seems that the RD160 does not sync to the signal.

Sometimes, switching the RD160 off/on by the remote control helps, sometimes I need to disconnect the RD160 from power.

The problem may therefore come from the RD160 and not from the RS130!!

In fact, I very rarely have problems with the RD160, and when they do, I restart it and everything is back to normal (Android).

My problem is with the RS130, for which I just updated to 5.9.07 without any problems.
I entered the 8-character PIN code and updated a few apps on Android.
I have no problems with this firmware after installation; the audio quality of my system is preserved, I haven’t lost any of my favorite radio and presets, etc.

The Hifi Rose teams also noticed my problem, which is a very good thing because it’s a random issue.
I’ll wait a bit before applying the patch that targets and corrects exclusively this problem.
It was sent to me today by ROSEHAN by email, and I thank a lot him for it.

:slightly_smiling_face:

When you have a connection problem how do you know if it comes from 130 or 160?

The example above indicates the same problem with an Eversolo and RD160

These are not connection issue at my place.
When ia problem comes from my RS130, I get a message on the screen.
When it comes from the RD160, the audio curve is flat, while the RS130 displays the current playback.
