Rose as DLNA client (again)

There was already so many posts about it but I (and the others too) still ask for DLNA client functionality. This is fundamental feature of even the any simplest network player from the very beginning when such type of devices started to exists on audio market. Why you are not able implement this feature?

Could I ask what the result of this means? Is it, for example, not possible to play music from a Plexamp client?

In my case - Media Server from Synology NAS is not discoverable in Rose. Just SMB connection works but this is not what I prefer to use

@ROSEHAN how would one play music on the Rose if they had music stored on Plex? I’m considering purchasing the RS520 and am curious about this feature.

You mean Plex media server?

Activate DLNA server in Plex, turn on DLNA on the Rose, then use some third-party DLNA controller to play it on the Rose. Unfortunately it is only a DLNA renderer.

Yes , this is as for now the only way to get it done. Is it really such the big problem to add UPNP controller option? Please , answer Rose-guys …

Yes, but Rose hasn’t (asked for that here some years ago) openhome integrated and they also have no plans to do this. So you don’t have (without buffering outside) gapless playing, which is for me a must.
Also, there isn’t any squeeze lite (eversolo has it) integrated.
So Roon is the (for me) only stable solution in using the Rose streamers with a larger library.

It shouldn’t. But then scanning a media library should not take a day either…

Pretty much. But then Roon is the best way to use a large library even if you have more decent (i.e. BluOS) software , too.

That said, given that Rose’s one and only schtick is the huge full-face front screen, it is disappointing that there is neither a DLNA controller nor a Roon Remote available for it.

@cakepilot

We are working hard to develop the Roon or Plex supported user interfaces to support the Rose app. We will also review Plex’s features in the future and improve them by adding what we can.

What’s a third party DLNA controller? For example, Plexamp? Meaning, could have library on a NAS, a Plexamp (as DLNA controler) on a Mac mini, streaming to the Rose (DLNA renderer)?

I don’t think Plex itself would do it. You could use Foobar2000, BubbleUPNP, or even Windows Media Player as well as many others.

So it’s been a long long time since I used Plex, but IIRC Plex is the server, Plexamp is just the player. That’s why I was wondering if Plexamp (Player) meant the same as DLNA renderer.

(Yes, as you can see… I’m still undecided :joy:)

No, I don’t think it is. Plex (server) has a buried setting to enable the DLNA server functionality but Plexamp (player) only works with the native Plex server. AFAIK it won’t either play from some random DLNA server or control a random DLNA renderer.

What do you want to control the playback from? There would be different options depending on what OS it is.

Well… you know a bit of the background… but for now, it’s mostly hypothetical as I’m still noodling on what to buy and how things would fit together. Mac mini would run Roon and/or Plex with files on a NAS. Since I want to use Plex to build a movie library, I’d probably also play around with it for music. At least to see how it fares against Roon. Roon I understand is straightforward, but don’t understand how I’d get Plex to work on Rose.

It’s obvious … from Rose player itself. It would be simple and the most straight forward solution as any network player should have and most of others network players already have embedded.

I’d just use Roon for music, at least Roon does have native support on the Rose. If you really want to play files form Plex, apparently there’s something called 5KPlayer that does work on a Mac and has DLNA controller functionality. Note though that it will not give all of Plex’s features, those are Plex-specific.

It’s absolutely not. And it’s not like there were many (are there any?) music players with Plex support. TVs sure, but stereos not so much.

Darko audio has a video describing his setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoVzLsMG6kY

Thought that was interesting. I don’t love software subscriptions, hence the idea to perhaps also try Plex.

Ah, the clown who peddles FraudioQuest cable…

I don’t like them either so I just bought a lifetime subscription so I never have to think of it again.

That said, Plex has some features that work… different, at least, than Roon. Whether it is better or not is debatable. But you won’t get them with DLNA anyway. I don’t think Plex would replace Roon for me but you could get it to work with Rose, albeit in a non-optimal way, at least unless Rose manages to get a build of Plexamp working on their odd-sized screen.

Plex has it’s focus more on video than on audio and isn’t for me a substitute for good music system.
Yesterday I’ve tested (after some years) Lyrion (LMS) with Rose and it seems to work now much better than in former times.
It’s gapless and free. You can use e.g. Daphile as Lyrion server and after activating a lot of plugins (for handling your music library, working with filters, room correction,…) it’s really a good alternative for Roon and much better than using a DLNA server with the Rose devices.
