RS130 Fibre SFP

Hi All,

Could you please recommend the correct kit to use the fibre SFP option for the ethernet connection?

I have purchased an RJ45 ethernet to fibre converter and suitable fibre cable, but am non-plussed as to which specific SFP to buy.

I’m in the UK - hence the correct spelling for fibre

Hi SidMuff!

I bought this from Amazon and it is working for me.

SFP+ DAC Twinax Cable 0.5-Meter(1.65ft), 10G SFP+ to SFP+ Direct Attach Copper Patch Passive Cable for Cisco, Ubiquiti UniFi, TP-Link, Netgear, D-Link, Zyxel, Mikrotik and More

DIGITUS mediaomvandlare – SFP-port – Gbit Ethernet – RJ45/SFP – 10/1000Base-T/TX till 1000Base-SX/LX

Maybe a fiber converter and another cable would be better.
Please keep me in the loop

Optospan is praised for its sonic quality over contenders like finisar, as I can concur.

and

Indeed, you can find other sfp cheaper.

Experiment if you will and keep us posted. Good luck!

There are 2 SFP types that I’m aware of - either Active or Passive.

SFP+ is active and has optical fiber connection
SFP is passive and has DAC (Direct Attach Copper)

Personally I wanted to prefer the copper version but the optical sounds marginally better.

Either SFP or SFP+ could be fiber or copper (or something else entirely). Difference, for the end-user, is in the speed supported.

I ordered these:
QSFPTEK 1.25G Gigabit SFP Fiber SFP Module, 1000BASE-SX Multimode LC Mini-GBIC Transceiver 850nm 550m DDM for Juniper EX-SFP-1GE-SX/QFX-SFP-1GE-SX, Ubiquiti, Netgear, Mikrotik, D-Link, TP-Link

ipolex Gigabit Single-Mode SC Fiber to Ethernet Media Converter, Built-in 1000Base-LX SFP Module, 1310nm, SMF, up to 20-km, Dual SC Fiber to 10/100/1000Base-TX (UTP/STP/Cat5e/Cat6 RJ45) 1-Pack.

OS2 LC to SC Duplex Fiber Optic Cable, LWL, Singlemode Jumper, 1-meter(3.3ft)

and returned them after they didn’t work. It is a minefield!!!

I have now ordered the RSA720 kit. I will asses this for Optical USB - connecting the CD drive and my USB SSD - if I hear an improvement I will investigate an Optical SFP for fibre ethernet further.

Thanks all for your input.

Well, there was no way it would work!
QSFTPEK 1.25G, 850nm is a multimode SFP module and Ipolex is singlemode at 1310nm! And the fiber patch is singlemode!
Both modules must have the same specifications to communicate with each other, and the optical fiber must correspond (singlemode for singlemode modules, multimode for multimode modules.

There is no active or passive SFP!

AOC cables are active and DAC cables can be passive or active.

I’m certainly not an expert and apologies to those I may have confused. So you are saying you can have active and passive cables both of which can have SFP at either end? Presumably in a HiFi, passive (which I now understand to be either copper or optical) is more than good enough unless you have a ridiculously long cable run?

See what I mean about it being a minefield!!!

It is not a minefield!
You don’t have to be an expert, you just have to do a little research:

Would the above be correct?

There may be a compatibility problem between the QSFTPEK module and the ipolex.
I don’t understand why you didn’t order modules from the same manufacturer.
Anyway, it is an entry level version that can be used with a cheap streamer (adding another multimedia converter).
If you had made a minimal effort to read the discussions, only on this forum for RS130, you would have found out that the recommendation is for singlemode fiber and Finisar or Cisco singlemode SFP modules.
And for the multimedia converter: TrendNet TFC-1000MGA… Or a switch that has an SFP port.
What you chose, I don’t know on what criteria, is like putting slim spare wheels on a Mercedes and you want it to go as if you put tuning wheels.

ANy time you see something like “it is an entry level version that can be used with a cheap streamer” you know that what follows is an utter BS. Of course the idea of single mode being better than multi mode for running a few feet of cable is utterly ridiculous already.
