In the USA, a girl is fighting for her life after contracting a rare but life-threatening infection with the protozoan Naegleria fowleri while swimming. The amoeba prefers to live in warm waters such as lakes, rivers, or springs. If contaminated water is inhaled through the nose, the amoeba can reach the brain and cause an infection that destroys brain tissue and is fatal in most cases. In the US, there were a total of 145 reported infections with Naegleria fowleri between 1962 and 2018 – only four patients survived.
According to the television station KXAS-TV, the girl has been placed in an artificial coma to treat the swelling of her brain. She is also receiving antimicrobial medication. “She’s a fighter,” the girl’s father told the TV station. “She’s stronger than anyone else I know.”
