Had an update from Spotify today, but still no lossless on my rs520… so I really don’t understand what gingerbread is talking about…
GingerBeard is saying he has lossless on his RS130.
Its not out on the RS520 yet, and no announcement from ROSE.
Edit:
I have Spotify on my Mac. It has lossless.
When I connect to my two spotify connect amps (Solo Uno and RS520) while the Mac has lossless, the app shows that neither can do lossless only high quality.
I guess the only way to get lossless is to get a source that has lossless and connect it to the RS520 using any in cable,
Honestly can’t tell a difference between Very High and Lossless. Plus there are issues w Spotify lossless.
Hey, I am on an older version of the Rose software because I am nervous to update. I got Spotify Lossless enabled by Spotify 2 days ago. If I select the Rose RS130 from the device list on my iPhone in the Spotify app, music starts playing and my DAC (RD-160) displays the same sample rate that Spotify is displaying (example: 44.1khz). If it was being resampled, I believe it would say 48kz or 192khz as I’ve seen with other android-based devices.
Ok, thanks, I can play Spotify loosless on my Kef Wireless 2 and on my Yamaha Cx -A 5200 but not on my HiFi Rose RS130
Here in Germany, Spotify lossless is available now on my ios and macos devices. When choosing the RS130 in the spotify app, the menu "media quality"says: “On this device (RS130), maximal streaming quality is level “very high” (up to 320 kbit/s / 0,14 GB/h).”
The “lossless” option (up to 1 GB/h) is displayed in grey (i. e. not available).
I hope Hifi Rose understands that they cannot afford to provide high end streaming devices, especially not a dedicated streaming transport, without the lossless option provided finally by the biggest streaming provider.
I agree with what you’re saying but to be fair…
Golden Sound released a video testing Spotify’s lossless.
Seems its not all that it is cracked up to be.
If you want spotify lossless thru your rose… then you need to use a device that has lossless and then use a digital out to your Rose device.
For me… I can use my iBasso DX180 and coax out. The interesting thing is you’re running it thru 2 DACs
(At least on my RS520)

I have noticed an interesting behavior with Spotify “Lossless” and my Rose RS250A. If I open Spotify on my iPhone, it chooses the iPhone speaker as default playback device. I have set the default playback quality to “Lossless.” I then tap the picture of the speaker, and it lets me select another playback device. If I choose my RS250A, it limits the quality to “Very High.” The Lossless option is greyed out (others have observed this). If I choose my other streamer/DAC, it allows Lossless to be selected. It appears that Spotify doesn’t recognize the RS250A as being Lossless capable. Then I go back to the iPhone speaker, with Lossless chosen (start over). If instead of choosing the RS250A, I choose Airplay on my iPhone (pull down the upper righthand corner of the screen) and then select the RS250A as the Airplay destination, the Lossless quality stays highlighted, and music plays through the RS250A. No complaints, no grey out. Now I can’t be sure what’s playing is Lossless, but it sounds good. The RS250A screen does not indicate the quality of the Airplay source (there is also no indication when I’m playing Apple Music through the RS250A). If I use this Airplay step with my other streamer/DAC, it shows “44.1KHz/16 bits ALAC” on the screen, when Spotify is playing Lossless over Airplay. Is this a way to bypass the problem Spotify has with the Rose device? Without the ability to observe details of the stream, I don’t know.
Spotify have said that it’s a hardware issue ie manufacturer that needs to sort out Spotify connect on their side so in other words hifi rose needs to update their Spotify connect app then all will be good it’s not a problem on Spotify side
Dear HiFi Rose users
First of all, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you have experienced regarding Spotify Lossless support.
Currently, the RS250A (and other RS series models) do not officially support Spotify Lossless playback.
This is due to a combination of technical limitations — including compatibility issues with Spotify’s Software Development Kit (SDK), Android OS version constraints, and certain hardware and certification requirements.
That said, we have included this topic in our internal development roadmap, and our engineering team is actively reviewing possible implementation options.
While we cannot yet confirm a specific timeline, we will announce any progress or updates through our official channels as soon as the technical verification is complete.
As an alternative solution, some users have reported that using AirPlay mode from devices like an iPhone allows Spotify Lossless streaming to maintain its “Lossless” quality when playing through the RS250A.
We truly appreciate your patience and understanding, and we remain committed to improving our products based on your feedback.
I’m not patient if even the most obscure brand has already implemented, and rose has “technical limitations”. A good reason, the last straw, to dump my RS520. Enough is enough.
It’s definitely time to switch from Rose to another company that takes its users seriously. I’ve already put mine up for sale, and despite the loss, I’ll be happy to get rid of it. Because what Rose is doing with the software is a mockery of its users. Technical issues mean that, like Tidal Connect, lossless Spotify on Rose will probably never appear, and they’ll just post every few months that they’re working on it.
Unless you’ve actually have had to work on releasing software and maintaining it… you really don’t know all of the issues.
If Rose is using an older release of Android and Spotify releases ‘lossless’ which is for a different release of Android or their SDK doesn’t support an older of Android… then you have some issues that take time to resolve. (On both sides of the equation. Either Spotify backports their SDK, or Rose upgrades to a newer release of Android. And neither is going to be painless. Spotify has less of a reason to do the backport.
Thats going to slow things down.
Now you have a couple of options…
-
Switch from Spotify to Tidal or Qobuz for lossless. Note that if you search YouTube, Golden Sound has released a video talking about Spotify’s lossless.
-
Take a device that has spotify lossless and connect that to the Unit and use that as input.
e.g Your Macbook USB-C out to USB-A on the Rose. I’ve also tested the iBasso DX180 line out (coax) into coax on my RS520.
Now that would get you lossless. Note that w the macbook you can upsample your source when you output to the USB port.
I also have a McIntosh MB20 for BT connections and using that to go from BT to optical in.
This gives me BT 5.0 vs what comes w the RS520. (IIRC its BT 4.2)
So you have options.
Now if you want to get rid of your RS520… that’s your call. You could always go to Eversolo Play which will not sound as good, has less power but a better UI and UX.
Or you could go and spend more on Atoll or Lingdorf (There are others out there … note that the Lingdorf has room correction.)
Lots of options… if you are serious about not have spotify lossless.
@Smegel : Thanks for putting things in perspective. I appreciate a discussion. I’m aware that I am pretty emotional on this. Still I’m not a complete newby on software dev with 25+ years working on operational ATC tower software and building Tower simulators for ATC training. So for me its al stability, reliability ánd a flawless user interface. That where my remarks come from. Still thanks for the perspective, but looking forward to a replacement, just to gain piece of mind for a while, because I also realise the grass is always greener on the other side. That’s life.
Wow, years ago I worked on a prototype for a new ATIS system. Around '96.
I get that you need to vent.
I don’t blame you, except that your dealer is the most responsible in terms of customer satisfaction. I bought my RS520 used from a dealer who took it back as a trade in because his customer wanted to expand into separates. So the price was really good. To me, that’s a sign of a good dealer.
Then its Rose Germany.
They should have sent you a new unit as a replacement.
I think Rose is having some teething issues. I don’t think that there’s a large team behind them (software) and they have a long list of tasks that they need to accomplish.

Boris,
Clearly you add nothing to the conversation.
Nor do you know much about software development.
Not all releases of software are always backwards compatible.
Now do you really know AndroidOS?
I don’t. So based on ROSE’s answer to the issue it would appear that there is a compatibility issue between the version of OS that they run, and Spotify lossless.
And Boris… in my other thread. I was talking about using a better BT access into the RS520 which yielded better sound.
For roughly $250… you can buy a iFi BT transceiver that does BT 5.4 which is probably better than any device you have. (Which BTW is backwardly compatible to early BT versions)
But hey… I guess you can’t buy a CAT 7 cable w RJ45 connectors even though Amazon and other stores sell them.
So unless you’re going to stop being an insult, please don’t join any conversations.
@Smegel Small world. ATIS. Though operational system we emulate it in our simulators. I agree it’ll be a small software team working with own standards. Commercial software has different standards than ATC, sad but true. Also with regard to testing it seems. Regression suffers clearly. Well, lets hope for the best, and in the meantime I dig around for a competitive alternative. Best regards.
The ATIS system I worked on was a prototype… back in '95 or '96 or so. Kinda cool and had to deal with some of the protocol issues. Unfortunately my buddy who brought me into the project passed away a few years back due to cancer. ( I feel bad I couldn’t meet up with him in Dubai when he was in Doha)
W.R.T the RS520…
At the price point… its going to be hard to beat. I don’t think you’ll find any AIOs w GaN amps.
I have a few friends who rave about their Atoll AIOs and there’s Lingdorf but those will be more money.
I think most every major brand has their own AIO. Some w screens… others require apps.
Let me know what you learn.
Cheers!
